Seth Feider comments about walleyes on Mille Lacs.

“The Minnesota mentality is the reason why walleye fishing was stopped,” Feider said. “The guys whine, ‘Oh, there’s no walleye.’ But they’ve never let one go in their entire life. They kept every single one and whine. Well, you ate them all. You could keep catching those fish if you let them go.”

    Have fun!

This quote is from an interview with Feider in an article on Bassmaster website from yesterday. I did see this earlier today posted on FB. Surprised…coming from him. shock

Blurting out things like this will not endear him with his new neighbors in Isle, or anywhere else around the neighborhood. Not sure what his point was?

My response to the post on FB…
The “Minnesota mentality” was the mentality everywhere not just Minnesota a generation ago. Fishing was not sport so much as it was to provide or supplement food. Times have changed dramatically since the 1940’s, 50’s and 60’s. To suggest that “The guys whine, ‘Oh, there’s no walleye.’ But they’ve never let one go in their entire life. They kept every single one and whine. Well, you ate them all.”
I find this insulting as this is not at all the case with many walleye anglers today. I have and continue to release far more walleyes than I keep. And on Mille Lacs for the past 4 years there has been either no keeping of walleyes or a very limited “keeping” harvest. The fishery sustained far greater harvests for generations prior to the last 5 years when “keeping and eating” harvest has all been mostly eliminated.

Hmmm? Just a couple weeks ago I ran in to him as he was coming into the Harbor Inn in Garrison. I recognized him right away and had a little chat. He had no interest in socializing with the locals and was very private. I cannot blame him at all for wanting some quiet time to have pizza and a few beers. But it does contrast with most “fishing celebrities” that are typically very social.
That could very well be his personality so I will certainly reserve any judgements on his character.
He proposed to his girlfriend at Appeldoorn’s and an October wedding is planned. I wonder how long the newlyweds will be happy living in Isle? whistling

Are you saying the locals will run him out? Or vandalism? Or threaten him or his future wife? What are you trying to say here?

I love Seth but I’m sorry that quote is flat out wrong.. The harvest levels were not the issue.

Say what you want, Seth IS a hometown hero. I guess this is where I would jump off the bus, and start questioning my beliefs on the matter. To suggest harm/malice to him or his family is wrong. His opinion is no different than any of our spewings on here or other social media outlets. I know Walleyestudent isn’t suggesting, or warning Seth or anybody else who speaks their mind on the topic. I have read many of his posts on this topic and can say he is one of the most respectful posters about the Mille Lacs issue here and elsewhere. I have the utmost respect for him and his dedication to the fight for the rights of us Minnesota sportsmen. I’m sure WS is more worried about Seth’s wellbeing than anything. To those that ARE suggesting any retaliation/malice, I would warn that there is no better way to turn people against the cause than acting like a bunch of redneck racists. The people who would be turned away by this behavior are the very people you need to convince that us Minnesota sportsman/women are being wronged. I aplaud Seth for having the guts to at least communicate his beliefs about the lake to that large of audience, even though I do not agree with him. There’s countless other local fishing “celebrities” that either beat around the bush or ignore the Mille Lacs topic all together that have made more $ than I’ll ever see in a lifetime from Minnesota natural resources. I hope some of them start coming out of the woodwork soon….

    Off my soap box now.

I think Andy was simply trying to point out that Isle isn’t a cultural hotbed. I caught zero hint of malice in his post, sarcasm yes, but nothing nefarious at all.

Yes me either. I simply mean IF those people are out there….. I know without a doubt Andy would have nothing to do with that behavior.

I don’t think I implied anything even close to what you are asking here. The days of tar, feathering, and running out of town on a rail is not the current practice now in Isle. No, and I don’t think they will burn his house down either.
I consider myself primarily a walleye fisherman so I suppose that puts me in the group that Seth is addressing here when he said “The guys whine, ‘Oh, there’s no walleye.’ But they’ve never let one go in their entire life. They kept every single one and whine. Well, you ate them all.”

Personally I take this as an insult. This does not accurately describe myself or many others in the “walleye angling community”. Perhaps he should have chosen his words more carefully but like “once the bullet leaves the gun, you cannot take it back” and the damage is done. I think if you hope to get along with your neighbors and a new community, you would not want to inflame them. Not to say he has no right to his opinion even if it differs from others but you can have those respectfully. His “opinion” quoted in the article not only is inaccurate but blames the walleye fishing demise squarely on walleye anglers and all the businesses that support the walleye fishing economy at Mille Lacs.
I am not attacking him or bashing him, but I like other’s around the lake will not bow down in his presence either. I would expect that he may have a reserved relationship with his neighbor’s.

I think Andy was simply trying to point out that Isle isn’t a cultural hotbed.

A few years ago, the former editor of the Mille Lacs Messenger newspaper made comments that were not in line with the views of the community. The backlash was such that she soon quietly left town. The current editor of the Mille Lacs Messenger newspaper also makes comments not in line with the views of the community. She however is still there because she far is more tactful in how she presents these views and opinions. They are fact based and even though perhaps not popular, she is still respected because she presents these differing views and opinions respectfully.

The entire country looks at Minnesotans and thinks pretty much exactly what he wrote. They were laughing all last year after BASS outlined the issues up there and the band played it perfectly with buying a second AOY up there. We look like idiots for the second year in a row.

I agree. Wisconsin used to have a similar problem with muskies — guys would fight like hell to honor the history that involved keeping them left and right while arguing that it didn’t make a difference. The culture has started to shift and the muskie fishing in WI has begun to improve significantly in general.

Also, there was an implied a physical threat around the Mille Lacs controversy in the other recent thread. Ridiculous.

Mille Lacs is an awesome lake. I love fishing it. The fact that some people refuse to promote/embrace/support the great bass fishing is just silly.

BASS is a business and a business only. What they or their fans think concerning the Walleye debacle on a national level hardly matters. Bass & Walleye are like Football & Beach Volleyball. Both sports but thats all they have in common.

The Bass guys from around the country if they come to Minnesota are coming for the Bass fishing. What do they care about Walleyes? The Minnesota guys who follow the tourney already know about the debacle and won’t be swayed a bit by what BASS or it’s anglers say about Walleye.

Don’t try and read more into this then whats there.

It’s a Bass tourney being held on a lake that has no more importance then if they held it on Minnetonka or Rainy.

I will agree with you here. Personally I think this event is a great thing to have take place at Mille Lacs. What I truly don’t understand is the almost complete ignoring of this event by almost all of the area businesses. I do find it very odd. Here is an example’ from the Y-Club in Garrison just up the road from where the tournament is taking place with even more visitors to the area today.
    Today’s promotion at the Y-Club;

It’s Gopher football Saturday! Come on in and watch the game with us!

That promo works 10 times a year. Unless you plan something specific to the tourny where the only benifit is coming into the Y you are just supporting the Casino. Why would anyone go to the Y for tourny info when they can go right up the road?
I get what you are saying but i see the other side also.

I find it somewhat humorous that someone comments about Seth’s “personality” or inwardness, but at the same time is blasting his comments in an article. Hmm.
Maybe this is why he doesn’t like to talk to people? Every word is picked apart or taken out of context. I’m sure there was more to that story but what hits print is a small fraction of it. After all its the media in the social media age of getting clicks…

john23, Just referencing the post #1715138 does not help much. The search feature at the top does not locate that here and one would have no idea what you are referring to. Not trying to be a jerk but you could just copy and paste the post or if you want post the link like this so it can be easily found.

“Read into stuff much ???? Geez.”

“Poking” is figurative I’m sure, and an objecting response could be anything other than bodily harm or personal or property injury.

Sorry, I am not apologizing for anything here. I am in fact a fan of his and was elated that he won the tournament last year and am truly hoping he takes it again this year. I can both wish best outcome for him and still not agree with his comments.

And keep in mind, events like this are by design in the public eye. This is not just some guy or group fishing privately. If there was no public attention, why would this event even happen? Who would know or care? What goes with the territory of being in the “Elite Bassmasters” circuit means you are not just an anonymous angler. These things are huge promotional and “fan following” events. When in the spotlight or under the microscope, the “celebrities” should know or have better PR advice or training to not alienate the local fishing community.

Fair question then, what would the bass and musky populations look like if every angler kept what they legally could?

    Serious question if I may

How many of the caught and released bass make it? I am not intending on stirring up anything, just wondering if there are a bunch of dead fish floating around next week.

    Thanks

that is a fair question but I believe that BASS has done a tremendous job in this area. 1, bass are heartier than walleye and can handle bouncing around in a live well better and 2, they have release pontoons and treated water in tanks to help them survive. Undoubtedly there are some that dont make it but far fewer than a walleye tourney I’m sure.

well, I guess by the fact you brought it up and how it was in direct conflict with how typical “pros” acted I perceived that as blasting him. I take his comments as face value and out of context. Watching the live stream last year and his comments during the even they do not jive at all.
I also thought it was a shot at him when talking about the “newlyweds” clearly there was animosity there or why even say it? I dont know Seth, never met him but I thought your post was rather poignant.

I don’t have the exact number in front of me but I recall reading after last years tournament they only had a few deaths in a few hundred caught.
