With the spawn all but over down around the central part of south dakota I have started to see post spawn patterns set up on mid lake structure. The past few weeks fish have been relating to shoreline structure such as points, rip rap, as well as downed timber. This structure continues to produce but mid lake structure has provided some good concentrated numbers of fish, and is another good option to look for when hitting the water. In south dakota mid lake structure may be a road bed, an old stock dam, flooded grove of trees or perhaps the tip of a rock spine, or rock pile. This last outing we targeted a rock pile that came out of 7 fow to 3 fow. It was small gravel rock that came out of sand/mud, so this was also a good transition bottom for feeding fish. We found aggressive fish relating to this isolated structure long before prime time and were kept busy casting small rapalas; F7s as well as Shallow #5 shad raps. With the opportunity to set two lines a dead line such as a bobber with minnow or bobber with leech is also a good option to have out. Water temps are in the low 50s, wind was light air temps in the high 50s. Stained water from alot of wind made the chartruese color patterns work the best. This big pike took the bobber midway through the outing and made for an exciting fight. A limit of eyes from 14-16 for the deep fryer plus a nice picture fish. Great evening out on the water.
