I have tried electrics and rapala’s and they are just to small to clean great lake’s salmon. What are some of you guys using that seems to work better for these large fish?

In my part of Alaska the go to knife is the Victorinix Cimiter 12”. I’ve cut thousands of king, red, silver, and pink salmon with it. When I upgrade I’m going to get the gratton blade.

I have this knife in the 9″ and 12″. Works great for me.

I second the Kershaw. I’m out on Lake Michigan probably twice-three times a week and have cleaned thousands of salmon and trout with it.

Cimeter/breaking knives are the way to go, they’re all I use for salmon. I use a 10″ Update International for big salmon/trout and an UltraSource-449414 Breaking Butcher Knife, 8″ Fluted Blade for smaller fish.

IMO regular fillet knives are inferior for salmon/trout. A big wide blade makes cleaning them so much easier with a cleaner looking fillet.

I have a Bubba rechargable that comes with 4 blades. The longest is a 12″ stiff blade that I haven’t used yet, but if it works like the other three, I don’t think you will be disappointed. A little pricey but it comes with two batteries. Also there is no cord to contend with.

I’ve been using a cheaper dexter Russell on lake trout for years without a problem. Stays sharp. I think I have the eleven inch model though.

I have a couple cheapo Dexter Basics 9″ fillet knives that I’ve used on lakers for years. Carbon steel blade is stiff and holds an edge great. They were like $8 from a restaurant supply store.

The big blade Rapala, though to beat a $25 knife that I’ve not needed to sharpen yet after 2 years and cheap enough to replace when I can’t get an edge I like anymore.

Thanks for all of the suggestions I went with the Victorinix, I’m sure all of the suggestions are great knives.
