Fishing was tough the first part of the trip with unsteady weather and the water temps below 60 degrees. The first few days started out on Namakan, where the fishing was tough . Tried the shallow sand bays with no luck and then tried the shallow rock reefs around Pat Smith Island. Some action happened here, but not much. Trolling Jointed Raps in 6-12′ of water seemed to get the fish to bite (black & silver and black & gold seemed to work best). The weather was windy, cold and rain threatened the whole time. Not many fish came to the boat but the largest was a 22′ eye. Tried slip bobbering the evenings here, but only could manage rock bass .

Sunday our trip moved to East side of Kabetogama, where the weather and fishing seemded to improve. Sunday was the first of 4 nice steady 80 to 85 degree days. As the weather steadied , the fishing really began to pick up. We were finding eyes on the shallow sand to rock transistions 4′ to 8′. Slip bobbering w/ leeches and throwing northalnd buckshot??? rattling yellow 1/8 oz jigs to these spots in the evenings/morning were the best bite for the remainder of the trip . During the day the fish seemed to move to adjacent 16-20′ deep water and could be taken on green phelps floaters with a leech rigging. By the last few nights since the houseboat was usually parked @ sandy beaches, the family started to take eyes off the back of the boat slip bobbering and often seeing decent size eyes roaming the shallows during the middle of the day towards evening around the boat. The water temp hit 70 by the time we left Thursday . I hope this helps anyone heading up there.

We had a great time and plan on a return trip next year!
