Why doesn’t Kabby get ice fished much like other big MN lakes?

Many reasons, but namely it’s too close to Rainy and given the option more people choose Rainy for its awesome multi-species opportunities. Secondly, and famously, SLUSH…and lots of it.
Thirdly, Kab has never had a good consistant winter bite of big fish. Generally the bite is sporadic and in specific locations, such as early ice down by Ash River. Lastly, the huge pike (20+ lb.) the lake was once known for are all but gone and the gator hunters have gone elsewhere. (Rainy
