The ice on the south shore of Lake of the Woods is deteriorating rapidly. I spent this last weekend there and was able to drive out to Pine Island in the truck, but used the 4-wheeler from there. The ice coming off the north side of the island is nothing but 40 yards of ruts and water. After that, the ice was good. It’s just a matter of getting through that broken up area. The weather couldn’t be beat, as it was 48 on Saturday and 60 on Sunday! It was nice to be able to ice fish and not have to set up the portables at all. As for the fishing, well it’s typical LOTW: incredible! The future looks great, as there is an unbelievable number of “tackle-busters”, 7 to 11 inch fish. They seem to be concentrated shallower, though. The buzz word is suspended. Every time a fish was marked at least a few feet off the bottom, it was ready to hit ANY presentation with the power of a freight train. This report probably won’t do many of you any good, though, because word is that Adrian’s has their road closed now. Anybody that missed this last ice period really missed out on some prime fishing.
