True fish story

On opening morning a friend and I were out on a Mankato-area lake. In one particular bay we had been casting into the weeds when we noticed something floating not far from us. We trolled over to investigate and found a 29.5″ walleye dead with about a 2 pound sheepshead stuck in her throat. She had truly bitten off more than she could chew. There were about 5-6″ of the tail sticking out of her mouth.

She hadn’t been dead very long because she was still somewhat flexible and her color hadn’t faded one bit. After a few quick pictures we put her back into the water to feed the critters.

I sent a cell phone picture to a buddy to brag about my “catch.” I then talked to him on the phone and found out he knows a kid studying taxidermy. We thought this might be a cool opportunity for the kid to practice on a unique mount. So we went back to get it and it’s now in my freezer, sheepshead in the throat and all. (Wife is thrilled)

Anyway, how many guys can say they caught a 29.5″ eye with their bare hands?

I have a crappy cell phone photo that I don’t know how to get off my phone, but hopefully if this kid will do the mount, I can send pictures.

That is an awesome story. To find something like that is unique, but to find it so quickly after it happened is even better. At least the kid will have a practice fish, and a pretty nice one at that.
Only thing is you’d better get the OK from the DNR. I know a couple years back (second hand info. for me) a guy caught a musky on his foot in Northern Wisconsin. The fish latched on and came in the boat with his foot. Apparently it was not a legal fish because it was caught by an illegal method.
I have no idea about the laws of picking up floaters but better safe than sorry.
    Thanks for sharing.

the musky story sounds like it maybe the one that actually happened in dodgeville at gov. dodge state park. a musky actually did latch on to a guys foot that he was dangling over a canoe in the water and tore him up pretty good, they did try to keep the fish as a memento of the stange event but i believe the ticket was for an under sized fish it was only around 28 in if i remeber correctly never did hear if they wound up with the fish or not still a cool find indeed though we found a 6pd+ largemouth once with a big bluegill stuck in his throat but he had been there a while
