I am headed up to Jay Cook State park for the week-end and was thinking about taking up the boat. Where would be a good place to try my luck. I know the St Louis is right there but have no clue about the river or where to fish it. I am open to any and all suggestions.

Amazing channel cat fishery, but keep it under your hat! There’s a dam and that is all I’m going to tell you.

If you want to fish for those pesky walleyes they have them in there too, but I usually just shake them off.

Hit the St. Louis for sure. It is full of walleyes, smallmouth, muskies, and yes catfish. You can put in near the HWY 23 bridge for smallmouth and ‘eyes. (Very close to Jay Cooke) Or head a little further down the road and put in at the Smithville public access.(You can’t miss the sign) Go either up or down river from Smithville. Fish the “lake” areas near the channel. You won’t be disappointed.

PM me for some spots if you like. Tremendous fishery. I used to live in Gary for 7 years.
