From time to time when fishing you are caught out on the water with out a scale. Is there a link that you can go to that has the length of a species of fish that you can then convert to pounds. As in a 20″ Small Mouth average weight is 5 or what ever pounds? It would be nice to know as when you release a fish you usually know the length but not the weight. Thanks in advance. Mark

Some of these require you to also measure the girth (not many of us ever do that). Here is one that gives you a good estimate based on length only. It may not be perfect, but that gives you more room to exagerate.

Another way to do it is just to make it up.

All “nice” sunfish weigh over 1lbs
All “nice” bass are 5 lbs or better
All “nice” walleyes are estimated at 8lbs

You use this estimator like this. “I caught a “nice” walleye yesterday. The chart I used put her right about 8lbs or so…….”
