For an upcoming trip, we would like to have 50 dozen medium-sized leeches. How many pounds should we order? How about for 50 dozen jumbo leeches? Thanks for your guesses/info.

Just talked to Dave from D&J riversports…

He said that mediums would run you about 3lb’s worth…and that you get about 12 dozen per 1lb of Jumbo’s. All “roughly” speaking.

Feel free to call him if you want more info.Hope that helps a little.

If you get the REAL BIG JUMBO’s, you get 55 to a pound. Those are my favorite! I have only found one supplier that can get them that big in MN.

Since the question has been answered, I’m going to slightly change the subject. On Cass last summer, I was prefishing when this mongo leech comes swimming by. I quickly snagged it. I’m guesing this thing to be 5-7 inches in length and 1/2 inch thick by 1.5 inches wide. It was huge, gross and I wasn’t sure I wanted to touch the thing. Anyone else ever come across these bad boys. Anyone try to catch a fish with them?? I think you would need a 2/0 cat hook.

That’s what they call a “Horse Leech”. They are common on Leech Lake. (Hence the name….) I’m told you won’t catch squat with them.

You will find them in Lake of the Woods also. They are HUGE. They are greener in color and do not seem to work for fishing. They are true Blood Suckers

Most of the math seems to be right on. I bought a 1/2lb of medium/small leeches from Everts today and had 8-plus dozzen when Steve counted um out
