My son and I will be shooting trap this spring-summer. We shot last year but WOW did prices jump this year. Anyone have a suggestion for a deal on shells?

Watch rogers sporting goods, they have good deals on trap loads. Stay away from winchester super target and universal, they undercut you on shot big time. My favorites for both 20 and 12 are as follows.

    Remington STS and Nitro 27
    Winchester AA sport
    Remington Gun Club
Remington game load 8’s (not legal in some trap shoots)

The rem gun clubs and game loads are very economical and are what I usually shoot because of costs. I also reload but unless you throw out $300 and reload in bulk it isnt any cheaper than hitting sales. Be sure to watch [censored] sporting goods, they run the gun clubs and game loads for $4.95 a box all the time.

Why did you sensor x sporting goods? Shoot me something if it can keep us shooting at an affordable price. Thanks.

I didnt, the chat did. D1cks sporting goods. Check their flyers, they have them on sale quite a lot. One you can look forward to every year is in august before dove season, they run the gun clubs for $4.95 and have a whole wall of them. But I have seen the same sale in almost every shooting/gun/ammo sale they have had.

Shawn do you have a reloader, if not you should get one. Loading shells is about the only way if your going to shoot quite a bit. I used to go out to the general public shooting range and pick up all the 2 3/4″ 12 gauge slug casings I could find. I had about 800 casings that I would reload until the brass wouldn’t size or the plastic would start to split on the crimp end. I usually got about 4 too 5 reloads out of one casing and reloaded them for about 8 cents a piece. We used to shoot alot and me and another guy would go out with no less then 300 rounds and usually 500. I used 7/8ths of an ounce in lead 7 1/2 shot and a windjammer 8 fluted wad, 700X powder which is a very fast burning powder and Feocci 209 primers. This recepie in a 2 3/4″ casing was a nice neat load and would crimp great at 60 lbs. With the speed of these loads and all you would have to do is aim at the very leading edge of the pidgeon to smoke or hit it. If your going to shoot much buy a reloader and buy 25 lb. sacks of shot and a pound of powder and a few boxes of primers to start. Its fun reloading!

How long ago was this? I have a reloader and they dont pay anymore. I figured it out and you are only saving like a quarter per BOX. Not worth my time.

Personally, I wouldn’t spend another dime with Dick’s given their stance on certain guns after Newtown shootings. Kind like spending money at the Casinos if you ask me.

I have a couple of shot gun shell re-loaders with hulls, primers, wads, lead. Every thing you would want to get started if that interests you. My boys and I spent lots of time loading shells together as well as shooting clay pigeons! Send me a pm if interested and I will send you my number so you can call me if interested.

Buying shot by the 25lb ($50 per bag) Powder by the 1# ($20), primers by the 100 ($5 each) you will never be able to reload for under $7 a box. You have to buy your shot by the pallet, powder by the 10#, and primers by the 10K to get under $5 a box. Not to mention you cannot find powder or primers anywhere anymore with the ammo shortage. A lot has changed in the reloading game the last 2-3 years.

It depends on what you want/are willing to buy at one time. If you get case prices, you can cut your costs down a little more.

Walmart also has those 100 round bulk packs of Winchester and Remington promo loads, as long as the shot size is allowed in your league.

It might be just me, but I think that Winchest AA and Remington STS seem to burn cleaner? I shot a couple of hundred rounds of Estate promo loads last fall and both of my guns were covered in a greasy soot and had to be stripped down and fully cleande. I’ve never seen anything like that after just 100 rounds per gun. Maybe it’s all in my head, but I’m sticking to AA from now on even if they cost a little more.

AA and STS most definitely burn cleaner. They have better powder, better primers, better shot, and a better hull for reloading. Promo loads are cheap because they are made from cheap products. Great for practice but not for competition.

It was probably 12 years ago, I didn’t know things went up that much. Shot was about 20$ for a 25 pound sack. Primers were 1.79 per hundred for 209’s. A whole sack of windjammer wads was 12$ for 250. 700X was about 15$ for a pound plastic jar. We stopped hunting rabbits about that time too and we used 1 1/2 oz. of no. 4 shot, 4 fluted double A red wads to keep the pattern tight, and HS7 for powder and it burned the whole length of the barrel, boy did those loads kick out of a full choke Browning auto, we never picked shot out of our rabbits or birds. Even with that much lead we still loaded our field rounds for about 15 cents a piece, but thats the prices down here too, Id bet the cities area would be more expensive but maybe not a whole lot more. I think our trap loads were around 8 too 10 cents a round when we quit shooting, ya its been awhile.

I reload about every other year and do about 10,000 rounds at a time. We do a group buy at the club to help keep the cost down. I don’t reload for the cost, I do it because I can’t find a factory load that I like for the 16.
