02 F150 burning oil

I have an ’02 F150 5.4, 90,000 miles, I change my own oil and filter and yesterday when I did I noticed I was about a quart low after 2500 miles, I change it every 2500 miles and this is the first time it’s been low, I use good oil but not synthetic.

I have no drips or spots under the truck, can’t see anything obvious along the motor or head, no puddles, looked with a flashlight. Thinking about it now, I do notice some smoke from the tailpipe after operating at normal temps, but honestly can’t tell if it’s blue or white, it doesn’t have an odor that I can smell.

Could it be something as simple as a dirty or faulty PCV valve? Looking for suggestions, thoughts as where to begin or what could be the cause, woke up to early today and it’s on my mind bothering me, thanks in advance.

Search some of the F150 forums or post this there. I use F150online for my questions. a lot of knowledgable people there that know these inside and out. Good luck and let us know what you find out.

Thanks, I’m reading f150 forums now and checking back here, it seems as though the burning oil is a normal and expected operation. Some do, some don’t,new situation for me though, it’s never happened in the past.

I would look into the PCV system for one, make sure everything is clean and funtional (the forum can run you through what to look for best). Also could try and upper engine cleaning, but don’t expect miracle from that. Do you make a lot of short trips with the truck? Could be the rings getting dirty but it’s hard to tell.

Wow, it only took 90000 miles for a ford to start acting like a chevy…

All my Chevys were a quart low at 3000 so I wouldn’t think to much of it. Just normal operation. I have been told a good motor should burn a little oil.

I have a 99 F150 with 215,000 miles on it and it is always a little low on oil when I change it every 3000 miles. Sounds somewhat normal so I wouldn’t worry about it too much.
