I’ll be going on my first Minnesota ice fishing trip this January. Pumped.

What are a couple pieces of critical gear you’d recommend? Other than Otters, Marcums, gloves, ice suit, sunglasses, good rods, good line, etc.

    Thanks in advance.

Big lakes can be unforgiving if the wind picks up and you can’t see shore. The best advice I can give is bring an external battery charger or a cigarette plug rigged to your flasher battery. The Navionics app is an absolute must if you do not have a standalone GPS, but it drains your phones battery. The last thing you want is to have the wind pick up after dark and you cant see shore and your phone, which is directing you back to shore, dies. Even if you don’t plan on being out past dark, always pack sufficient lighting (headlamps, flashlights ect.)

Current and local ice reports. This is not like ordinary years!

Not sure how far north you’re headed or how soon in January. Vehicle traffic is a non-option right now almost everywhere and will remain dodgy for some time to come. We would like to have you up here for more than just one visit wave
