Reality check this morning.

I’m not sure how this be taken, but I thought I needed to say how I feel towards my bow hunting times. I’ve had a week of hunting under my belt looking for the big boy. It has been very frustrating at times and I was getting burned out on my quest for the bruiser. Hunting should be fun…not stressful!

Then this morning I finally realized WHY I enjoyed going bow hunting every Fall! It’s not always the hunt for Mr. Big that matters! I had decided to hunt behind the house where a steep hill and a creek make a funnel along with a deep water run coming off the hill that has only one narrow spot for deer to cross the water run. Above this funnel is a rock cliff where I sit on a pail under this cliff and the creatures don’t have a clue I’m above them. I worked my way down to my pail about 20 minutes before first light. Twenty minutes later I realized a flock of turkeys were roosted on the adjacent hill. They were squackin to no end. I always have a turkey call in my mouth when in the woods, so I decided to join in on the fun!

About ten minutes later I noticed a fawn working it’s way to my funnel and I see she brought some friends with her. I watched a black line coming down the hill right on her tail! My turkey friends decided they wanted to see if their friends from earlier were still around??? All 17 turkeys crossed the water run but at the deepest spot. Who said turkeys were smart! They soon walked off and silence was then back in the area.

Fifteen minutes later I noticed that fawn was back out walking around which then noticed a buck heading her way. I grab the binos and seen he was a 1 1/2 year old 6 point out for a late morning stroll looking for love. He took a quick look at the fawn and headed thru my funnel and up the hill he went… nose to the ground the whole way.

Twenty minutes later I noticed movement on the opposite hill. It was a red fox scurring around for a morning meal. I then noticed a 2nd fox traveling with him. They went to the bottom of the hill checking for something to eat. They finally crossed thru my funnel and then both turned and headed up the hill towards me. I thought to myself… “How cool is this???” They both jumped up on a dead fall a walked it up to the point where the first fox walked up to 10 yards of me at looked at me not knowing what I was???
He turned and walked up around the point above me. Then the second fox did the same thing. Took a quick gander at me then moved on. They disappeared for about a couple minutes when I seen them shooting up the other hill. I think someone got a whiff of my thermals??? And decided…”We’re out of here!”

After that my sit was pretty much uneventful, but I know I feel much better because I realized why I love this sport of bow hunting. It’s not always the big buck going down… it’s time spent with Mother Nature at her best!

Thanks for your time and remember that we are blessed with an area teaming with Mother Nature at her best. Enjoy your time spent with her. Some people may never know what they have here and I’m sorry to say probably never will!
Good hunting everyone! I’m heading out for an enjoyable evening!

That is a great point zim and thanks for the reminder! So many of us get so focused and frustrated when things aren’t perfect we lose sight of some of the best things surrounding us. I would rather be in a tree anyday than anywhere else in the world. Good luck enjoying the rest of your season to everyone!

Can’t wait to get down there and getting in the woods with ya Uncle Jer. After sitting in college classes all week it really makes you realize how nice it is in the woods. Ya never know what will walk by.

Great read and I couldn’t agree with you more Zimmy. I was in college the last 5 years and hunting time was always fun but a little stressful for me because I always knew I had studying to do or projects to work on and I had never done enough scouting or preparing. I sat in the woods all day Saturday and it was the most enjoyable time out hunting in quite some time because I was really just able to enjoy it. Helped that I saw an 8 early Saturday morning that jumped to the top of my hit list.

Well said Zimmy! In my opinion the fun ends when you finally get to release your arrow on a good buck(although the celebrating afterwards is always a good time ). The hunt and just plain being out there is really the greatest part of bowhunting. Great post!
