She’s caught plenty on open water, but she’s been blanked her previous two ice trips. I was impressed with her patience and hooksets. My son caught some dandy’s too

That’s awesome Lindy!
I like your plywood setup for the shack too, I bet that helps.

It helps a ton for deep snow and slush for sure.

Great job Dad!!Iowaboy1Posts: 3611January 25, 2023 at 10:21 pm #2176346Very awesome — one of my few regrets in life is that when my daughters were this age, I let my career/work get in the way of my previous outdoor living lifestyle for too many years. We’d go camping 1-2 times a year, but not much more. For new parents start please this now and you’ll never regret it, for older dudes like me it is not too late.
Both my daughters are away at college now, but I’m back to spending as much of my time as humanly possible outdoors and I’m happy to report that getting out on the ice or the water kayaking or even scheduling a 3-day river trip with their dumb old dad is their top priority whenever they’re back home. It is the best.
deltakPosts: 30January 26, 2023 at 7:06 am #2176370Hey so I want to do something like this with my kids next year. I’m just getting into ice fishing. Should I get a small 1-2 person popup for when I go alone, and a 4-5 person one for when I take the family? Or is the weight/size difference not enough to justify having two different shelters? Would be dragging behind a sled. Thanks

It depends on your budget. Lots of guys have multiple shelters for various situations. Depending on the age of your kids, you’ll definitely want enough space and bring along some entertainment options in case fishing is slow.

We were in an Otter Lodge. It was cozy but it worked fine. An Otter Resort would have plenty of room.
Otherwise there are plenty of hub style houses both Otter and Eskimo makes nice ones. Grab the kids and go sit in some to see what you like.

I really enjoy seeing the excitement on kids faces when they catch a fish. My daughter has been out ice fishing with me since she was 1 year old.
