Mirror Carp?

Last night a friend and I hit a local spot for a few carp – just to get the kinks out of the line… .

Among the fish we caught was a 6lb carp with about 1/2 of its body missing the scales. Big, leathery patches that did not appear to be scars covered about 1/2 of each side. the scales that were present were larger than normal and scattered…

It was an odd looking fish to say the least.

I believe this to be a ‘mirror carp’ from what I’ve read. Any guesses?

Yup, guaranteed mirror carp! They are very cool fish. Did you happen to get a picture?

Nope – no pic. Never thought about it until after the fact. It was only a 6# fish….average at best…and we initially thought it was sick. I did a little snooping on the web today and saw a mirror carp that looked similar……..then thought “why the heck didn’t we photo it?” Hindsight is 20/20 I guess .

I would assume this is a genetic strain of the basic carp, and not a different species? Like a spotted/barred/clear phase musky?

Thanks guys – those are exactly like the one I caught last night.

How common are they? I have targeted carp three times since the water warmed a little – and have about 25-30 fish to hand – and lost about as many more. Only one of them was a mirror carp.

Anyone know why they are named “Mirror”?
I’ve never saw one of these.

My guess would be because they are usually smooth on most of their body?
