Was talking to my little brother, who is attending Alexandria Tech for law enforcement. He said that a truck went through Minnewaska earlier this week. Not a good choice, especially with 3-MONTH OLD CHILD !!!!!

Luckily no one was hurt. So be careful out there, ice is very unpredictable right now.

Did some looking around and found this article from the Pope County Tribune:

    Truck through the ice

    Quote:

Truck goes through ice on Lake Minnewaska, no one hurt

A pick up truck sat at the bottom of Lake Minnewaska for two days after it went through the ice last Monday afternoon.

    No one was hurt.

According to Pope County Sheriff Tom Larson, the pick up truck, driven by 22-year-old Matt Macho, of Villard, went through the ice and into 15 feet of water around 4:51 p.m. on the lake’s northeast side, near Bottle Bay, near Woodlawn Resort.

Also riding in the truck at the time it went through the ice — a young woman and the couple’s three-month-old son.

The vehicle reportedly hit a fresh crack in the ice when it went through.

In recent years, front ends of vehicles have gone through the ice, but Larson said he can’t recall an incident over the last 10 years when an entire vehicle has sunk to the bottom of the lake.

The truck was removed from the lake Wednesday afternoon.

With this latest incident, Larson advises people heading out on the ice in a vehicle not to drive faster than 15 mph on a lake.

“When you drive fast on the ice, you create a wave ahead of the vehicle and if that wave hits an open spot in the ice — like a fresh crack — the vehicle can go through the ice.”

Also, be sure windows are down and seatbelts are off when driving on the ice in case there’s a need to make a quick escape from a sinking vehicle.
