The Red Door Resort will start doing a ice report early next week. Looking out from the shores of the resort we can see some pretty good looking conditions! A local walked out to the new ice on Friday to find just 1 1/2- 2 inches. Colder temperatures end of next week! Lets hope the snow stays away………stop by and see us at the ice fishng show in St.Paul Dec.6th-7th and 8th

    The Red Door Resort Fishing
    10-17-13

The fishing report for the October full moon is shaping up! The weather will bring a chance of rain showers and managable winds to the northend of the lake. The water temperature has now reached the lower 50’s. The walleye are starting to show up along the shallow breaklines out front of the resort. Trolling the weeds with shallow running minnow baits have been putting a few fish in the boat. While some fisherman are catching fish on shad raps also. Varying your speed has triggered the fish. The success has improved in the fish cleaning shack also! This has been a change with the cooler water temperatures. Some fisherman have been rigging minnows out on the outside breakline in in 26-28 fow having some success. While others are trolling leadcore during the day in the same areas picking up a few fish.

Not much to report from this area. A few looking for big fish with teeth! and a few fishing smallmouth. Been in a unstable weather pattern rain and wind….we are hoping the fall brings better weather and better fishing.

The Red Door Resort Fishing Report 8-23-13

Not much actitivity on the fishing around the resort this past week. Trolling lead core and crankbaits has been what most have been doing. The deeper water off the mud flats has been the best areas to fish. Rapala shad raps and tail dancers have been the baits of choice. The fish need to be located on your locators. If you are not seeing fish on your graph, keep looking! The muskie action should pickup as the calendar pages get turned. The water temperature had cooled down the early part of August. But now has rose back up into the low 70’s again.
Time to make your plans for the fall trolling. Fall can be a great time to get on the water before the cold and snows come! Also it’s also a great time to make a visit to the fish house and check it out before the weather gets to cold to get any painting and maintance done. Check the skids, tank rack, pull devises, heater etc.

The Red Door Resort Fishing Report 8-15-13

The fishing report around the resort has been pretty quite. Talk of the muskie action has become part of the conversations! Some have caught a few lunkers and others have lost them while having them on for a short while on their walleye rigs. One customer got a 40lb class fish next to the boat, only to have it make yet another spash and in doing so broke his leader.
The walleye reports are coming from trolling lead core rigs out on the deep mud flats. Rapala shad raps and tail dancers have been putting some fish in the boat. Looking for fish on your locators will be the key to success. If your experiencing a blank screen keep looking till you locate some fish. One location might have fish one day only to have them move another. The smallmouth reports have been ok. Those that have spent the time have had some success. Topwater plugs will be the lure of choice as we get into the late summer-fall seasons. The water temperatures have been falling into the upper 60’s.
Time to make your fall trolling plans. The full moon’s can be a great time to spend on the water. Many big walleye are caught during this time frame.

The Red Door Resort Fishing Report 8-8-13

The reports around the resort are bigger fish being caught on leadcore. Fisherman are trolling leadcore out in the deep areas on the mud. Those that are having some luck trolling the leadcore setup are pulling Rapala shad raps and Salmo hornets. Look for the fish to be found off the flats and or along the deep breaks on the flats. The past week the water temperature has dropped some with the cooler over nite temperatures. You can feel a touch of fall in the air! can’t believe I wrote that….with that thought make your plans now for the fall trolling bite during the full moon.
The smallmouth are a great option currently. Reports are that the fish are a little deeper than normal. Anchor up and catch them under a bobber tipped with a leech or worm.

The Red Door Resort Fishing Report 7-31-13

This weeks report out of the resort is pretty slim! Many of our guests have been families and family reuions. Those that have been fishing are finding it on the more difficult side. Some are getting fish on spinners one day and not the next. The leadcore trolling bite has been much the same. You do have to work at it in order to locate the fish and to get the fish to bite. I’m hearing some muskie actitivty, but not what or where! Tight lipped reports from that end of things. The smallmouth fishing is going well. You just need to spend your efforts in alittle deeper water. Those that have had some success are getting fish in 14-16 fow.

The Red Door Resort Fishing Report 7-25-13

The leadcore trolling bite has been the best presentation for catching fish this past week. Some reports are coming in from trolling a spinner crawler rig. While others are still catching some fish on lindy rigs and leeches. The mud flats are still the main area to concentrate your efforts. Salmo Hornets and small Rapalas have been the crankbaits of choice and hamered gold and hammered silver blades have been the best for spinners. The water temperature has been in the mid 70’s the past couple of weeks now.
The smallmouth action is still an option near the shallow rock shorelines. Tube jigs and popper topwater plugs will now turn a few fish!
Its not to early to start thinking about your fall full moon plans.

The Red Door Resort Fishing Report 7-18-13

The reports around the resort are the walleye are going more after a spinner crawler rig than a lindy leech rig. The mud flats are still the areas to concentrate your efforts. The edges on the flats in 24-26 fow has been the best areas. Some fish are coming from on top of the flat early in the morning. As the sun comes up work off the flat into deeper water. Trolling leadcore and crank baits have also started to catch some fish. Off the flat in 30+ fow has been good. If your seeing fish on top don’t be afraid to raise up your linecounters and make a run down the top! Shad raps and Salmo Hornets have been the best crankbaits reported. Evening fishing along the edges of the flats has been a good slip bobber option.
The smallmouth action continues to offer a great option along the deep breaks along the rocky shorelines. Tube jigs and mepps spinners have been the best baits. The water temperatures are now in the mid 70’s.

The Red Door Resort Fishing Report 7-11-13

The fishing continues to be good around the resort! Rigging leeches on the mud flats has been the best method over the past week. Working the edges in 24-28 fow has been the best area on the mud flats. The spinner crawler harness is also working for some in the same areas. The lead core trolling has also picked up over the past couple of weeks. Trolling along the deeper water off the flats and in the basin has been the best areas. Salmo Hornets and Rapala shad raps have been the baits of choice while trolling. The smallmouth action has also been really good. Pitchin tube jigs on and off the rocks has been the best areas. Mepps spinners has also caught some nice fish.

The Red Door Resort Fishing Report 7-3-13
Reports are coming in from the mud flats this week. The walleye are either bitting on a lindy rig with a leech or a crawler. Pulling spinners with a nite crawler also has been a good second option. The fish have been found on the edges of the flat in 26-28 fow. Take the opportunity to look on top of the flat if the fish are not found along the edges! .5 mph has been the best speed for rigging and .8-1.2 mph has been good for the spinners. Hammered gold and hammered chrome blades have been the best on the spinner rig’s. Some fish have been reported to being caught also off the flats in deeper water. If your pulling fish in from the deeper waters, please take your time reeling in your catch. Don’t stress the health of the fish by pulling it up off the bottom fast. Another important point I would like to make is the time some of the fish are out of the water. Take a quick picture and get the fish back in the lake. Handling the fish and holding it for “minutes” out of the water is killing our fish. So please release the fish in a proper manner allowing it to live another day. The water temperatures are now in the upper 60’s on most days. The smallmouth fishing has been really good also. Pitching tube jigs in the shallows has been the ticket! 5-14 fow has been the target area.

The Red Door Resort Fishing Report 6-27-13

The activity in the fish cleaning shack has improved over the past week! That’s good news around the resort as our customers are keeping a few more fish. The mud flats has been the most productive area over the past week. Lindy rigging with a leech on the breaklines has been the ticket on most days. Maintaining a slow speed of .4 to.6 mph is important in order to get bit. The spinner bite has also been putting some fish in the boat as of late. Rigging a fat night crawler on a crawler harness has been working along the breaklines on the mud also. Your speed for pulling spinners should be around .8 to 1 mph.
The water temperature has now been in the mid 60’s and above on some calm warm days. With the warm up of temperatures the smallmouth action has really taken off. Tube jigs pitched off the rock stuctures in 8-14 fow has been the areas here. The clear water has been stained some due to the recent rains which has helped with the shallow bite.
“don’t be a fair weather fisherman”
some good reports have come from raining, cloudy, and even fogging days!

The Red Door Resort Fishing Report 6-20-13

The reports are coming in from the mud flats and deep areas around them. Some anglers are reporting that the fish are holding very tight to the bottom and are difficult to see on the fish locators. Rigging lindy rigs and leeches have been the ticket out on the mud flats. The shallow shoreline structure has still been producing its share of fish also. Slip bobbers and leeches in the 8-12 foot area’s have been the best. The shallow water has been better on cloudy days along with some wind to break up the surface water. The water temperature has now reached the mid 60’s on calm warm days. This has triggered the fishng action as predicted. A few smaller fish have been reported under the 17 inch mark. Not large numbers of smaller fish, most fish coming to the boat have been the 21-26 inch fish as its been all this season.
The smallmouth bass action is going strong! Tube jig’s pitched in the shallows have been the most common method used. Some have just been using the leech and slip bobber method that works just fine also.

The Red Door Resort Fishing Report 6-13-13

The surface water temperature has now finally reached the 60 degree mark! and with that fishing has improved also! The walleye are still shallow for the most part, but some success is coming from the mud flat areas now also. Rigging leeches on long leaders have been the ticket out on the mud while pitching jigs and plastics and or minnows have caught the fish shallow. Bobber fishing the shallow break lines is another option if and when the wind is blowing. The water clarity is very good currently. One can see your anchor in as deep as 14+ FOW. With the clear water conditions it is very important to keep that in mind when fishng. As the fish will be boat shy and spook from any boat movement etc. You need to get your bait away from the boat. Don’t be fishing under the boat!
The evening bobber bite is yet another good option. Reports are coming in from the bobber fisherman that just befor dark the fish have been pretty active. Most of the fish that are getting caught are in the 21-26 inch range. We have had reports of some over 28’s getting caught also.
The smallmouth bass action has been really good also. Pitching tube jigs have caught a number of fish as have live bait such as a leech. We did hear of a report from a local of a 23.5 inch smallmouth caught and released this week. That fish may have been the next state record………one will never know! guess someone will need to catch it again.

    Wednesday February 20th

Heading into the final weekend report:

Big NW winds the past couple days have created more and bigger drifts. Our roads are opened to the south tip of Eileens, running by Weimer, Bombeck, Resort and Fish House flats. We might have a trail plowed to Pantry and Fletcher by the weekend as well. Roads at the 30 ft. level run east and west along shore too.

Off road travel is doable but hard, frozen drifts are scattered around and quite a few spots where big fish houses sat over winter are now vacant and potential traps to drive into. The road banks have low spots to break out of the road if need be. Even on cloudy days, polaroid sun glasses will allow you see the drifts easier in the process of trying to avoid getting stuck. 4 wheel drive in bigger SUV’s or pick-ups is a must. Cars will not work off road anymore this year.

Fishing reports remain about the same. Our rentals this past week caught quite few big ones including several over 28″ with one 29.5 and one 30″ leading the way.

Houses will be off the lake by Tuesday.

We got about 8 or more inches of snow over the past few days and wind with it. All the roads disappeared but are now open to all the areas previous to the snow. Driveways to perms will be done, hopefully, by the weekend. Please call if you are coming up earlier than Friday so we can get your driveway on a to do list. Be sure to re-block your houses before you drill holes if you have any doubts of how high you are!

So–roads to Eileens, Resort, Weimer, Bombeck, Fish House and Pantry are open.

That said, off road travel will be very limited at best with all the drifts now in place. If you venture off road, be ready to dig yourself out…do you have a shovel and tow strap?

To avoid getting stuck, travel past where you want to stop and circle around back into your original tracks and then stop, so you have a way out. DON”T STOP AND EXPECT TO BE ABLE TO START GOING AGAIN WITHOUT MAKING THAT TRACK FIRST.

Fishing was okay for some over the past few days. Others not so good. Spotty?

Thanks for everyone’s patience dealing with the fresh snow!

The report is almost the same as the recent past ones.

The ice is still almost snow free with some drifting mixed in. Cross country travel is fine if you watch for the drifts and avoid them, especially when and where you stop. Between the few drifts, the snow is about an inch deep.

There are no live cracks as of now in our area but with the warming trend, the ice is bound to shift somewhere in the next day or two.

Attention permanent house owners! Be sure to start planning on how you are going to get your house loose, blocked and ready to pull off the ice in the next couple weeks. If you don’t plan on using the house from now on or after your next trip, get it ready to pull and let us know you are ready. Don’t wait until the last minute since the banking is tougher to break out of this year than most years due to the rain we had earlier.

Fishing reports from the past few days have been good one day and tough the next. Rentals have had 15 plus fish days recently and slow days mixed in as well. The bigger numbers of fish are coming from the 30 ft. areas along shore.

    Caution advised!!

Earlier we said cross country travel is not an issue. Our guys on the ice have just discovered a LIVE crack several inches wide and growing, about 2-3 miles from shore—running SE to NW. Mid-Resort Flat level from shore. Where it goes to the east or west from there, we have no idea.

SO! We it bridged it on our road so perm houses can get in and out, at least for now, that have houses beyond that point. BE VERY AWARE OF THIS NEW CRACK THAT IS OPEN AND LIVE IN MUDFLAT COUNTRY.

Will it heal up soon? Who knows but for now…be very careful while off road traveling this weekend. This cold weather creates unexpected traps just like this. Big surprise to us…

We now two bridges in place. One by shore and one out on the new crack. All is fine on our roads! Thanks for your patience…as we will ALWAYS err on side of caution.

    Friday February 1st

Obviously, we have been reminded the past ten or more days that this is winter on Lake Mille Lacs.

With a dusting of snow the past couple days and a huge northwest wind howling across the ice, there is a fair amount of drifting on the ice nowadays. Cross country travel is fine as long as you pay attention to where you stop, avoiding any drifts as you go. The ice is now white with snow covering what has been bare ice all winter. In fact, we now have enough snow to scratch real roads out to the fishing grounds.

The light snow and big winds again piled up drifts on the west and north sides of the perm houses. If you are smart, and have any doubts if you are blocked high enough, add blocking before you drill new holes. The banking that has been around the houses, due to the rain earlier, is almost solid ice, so it is quite a chore to break some of the houses loose–just to block them up more. But at least there is now plenty of banking snow close by each house!

The cold snap has again opened a wide crack close to shore that we have bridged. PLEASE–only ONE VEHICLE NEAR OR ON THE BRIDGE at one time and go very slowly over the bridge! You are driving on water– not pavement! SLOW…thanks!

The cold snap slowed the walleye bite some but fish are getting caught. Same patterns and areas as the past few weeks. The warming trend for the coming weekend could be better.

    Tuesday January 29th

Finally we have a little snow that stuck on the ice and didn’t blow away. A whole inch(or less). Cross country travel remains fine without plowing but we have now scraped a path out to mudflat country that will maintain from now on. The only active crack in our areas is the one we have bridged along shore, that is changing with every big temp swing. Thanks for everyone’s patience as we work on keeping the bridge usable.

Drifting around the houses is causing some flooding so either block things up more or have the house moved to greener pasture. Plowing those drifts ( on the north and west side of the houses will only make bigger drifts and more weight on the ice.

Fishing reports ate stable. Many are catching a few along shore in 28-30ft. and some are gettng good numbers on small spots out the various mudflats. Plain hook and bobber rigs are still are out pacing the jigs.

    Friday January 25th

The cold temps have been steady so the ice conditions have been relatively stable. The crack that opened last weekend as the cold snap hit is now 8ft. wide from original edge to edge. The warming temps later this weekend will no doubt buckle things pretty good as the ice sheet gets bigger again. Thanks for your patience if we are having to work on the bridging over the crack this coming Sunday–for sure.

We got a couple skiffs of snow that has mostly blown of the lake. Snow drifts around the houses are hard and deep but cross country travel in all directions is good to go due to no snow and almost glare ice.

The drifts have caused some flooding so if you have any doubts about how high your house is blocked, raise it before you drill holes.

Fishing reports are about the same, “good”, bad”, “great”, “slow” and some even “nothing”. Deep water (29-30ft.) along shore still is more consistently good than the mudflat bite. Rattle reels are still out fishing the jiggers.

    Thanks everyone!

    Tuesday January 22nd

The recent big cold snap and wind is the talk of the ice world.

Although 95 percent of the ice sheet is now snow free, the drifts around the houses due to the big wind the past few days are deep and hard. For those that have not been up since before the snow drifts formed , you might want to re-block your house before you drill holes as the extra weight from the drifts is causing some flooding around some houses.

Cross country travel is fine. We have a wide crack due to the cold temps along shore that is bridged. Please be aware that our bridge is 9 ft. 5 inches wide so any wheel houses over the legal highway limit might not fit or at the very least, will have trouble getting lined up on it as you attempt to cross it. It is not a straight shot onto the bridge from the access so getting lined up is touchy. The crack dictates how, where and when we bridge it. We welcome wheel houses but just saying…….

Fishing reports are spotty. Good catches are coming from the shoreline areas in 29-31 ft. and from some spots on the mudflats. The deep shoreline areas seem to be more consistently good.

    Thanks for everyone’s patience!

For now, today, we have the access open to all vehicles but no wheel houses in tow. Our bridge is in place to where any long rigs will not be able to line up onto it going out. (the ones that are out now on the lake can get off easier as the angle is better.) Hopefully by tomorrow (Monday) sometime, we can get the bridge straight out again from the ramp and be good to go for the long rigs too. Call the office for imediate updates.

    Thanks again…
