Minnesota Region Heads to Rush Lake

    By Steve Weisman
    GNWC Publicity Director
After a month off, the teams on the Minnesota Region of the Gander
Mountain Grand National Walleye Cup (GNWC) head to Rush lake on Sunday, June
    6 for their second tournament.
According to Gander Mountain GNWC Executive Director Bernie Barringer,
“Rush Lake is a quality walleye fishery. I think the teams are going to like
the lake and the opportunity to catch good-sized walleyes. We really started
off the Minnesota Region with a great bite at Red Wing. I think if we hit
the weather just right, we should have another good bite at Rush Lake.”
Although Rush Lake has a maximum depth of 68′, over 60 percent of the
lake is less than 15′ deep. DNR lake surveys show a high abundance of
walleyes with an average length of 14.3 inches and a good opportunity to
catch trophy fish over 25 inches.
Barringer also noted, “There is a great weedline bite this time of the
year, and with all the structure in the lake, I think the teams will enjoy
    the challenge Rush Lake offers.”
Openings still exist for the Rush Lake qualifier and Barringer
encourages interested anglers to contact him at 1-800-890-FISH (3474), or
email the GNWC at [email protected]
According to Barringer, competing teams should be at the Rush Lake
Trailer park between 6-6:30 Sunday morning to sign in and participate in
mandatory boat inspections. However, the tournament director will have the
GNWC trailer at the check-in site from 6-8 p.m. on Saturday evening to
answer questions and to take any late registrations. Host bait shop will be
    Anglers Marine and Sport.
    The tournament hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Weigh-in begins precisely at 3
p.m., with awards to follow. “I hope we get a good crowd to come to the
weigh-in. There is a lot of excitement when the teams come to the stage with
baskets of walleyes. It’s also a great time for the public to hear what
these teams did to trigger their fish. The neat part is that they can then
go out and try the same presentation,” added Barringer.
Anglers interested in checking out the standings, reading the releases
about any of the eight regions or simply learning more about the circuit can
