Awhile back I heard of a rumor that was going around quietly that the Department of Natural Resources was considering lifting the catch and release regs on Pool 2 of the Mississippi River sometime in the near future….I naturally got on the horn right away and contacted our fisheries specialist for Pool 2 by the name of Dirk Peterson and asked him if there was any truth to this……?

Dirk laughed politely and said “no, we have no plans to change the rules and regulations for the anglers on Pool 2 now or anytime in the future. He was very pleased at the direction that Pool 2 has taken since the 1994’s total catch and release program and is excited to see this fishery continue to grow each year.
There will however, be a new survey conducted on Pool 2 for the for the 2003 year. Not sure on when this will actually take place but it is scheduled.

Speaking of Pool 2…anyone else have Monday off for the holiday? I am debating going out for a bit, but w/ baby due in the next 2 weeks I dont know if it is worth it. Looks like warmer temps on Sunday and 30s for Monday.

Glad to here that they are keeping the catch and release regs. The fishing is just too good to start messing w/ current regulations.

Dave: I will be off Monday also. I will get down there this weekend to see if the ice can be removed enough to get out. If the weather is not too bad I would consider going out.

Thanks for the post DeeZee. Glad to hear the fishery will stay as is. It’s a great place with very few people due to its catch and release status.

    Thanks for the update, Steve.

C & R has made this pool what it is today. A great place to put a few fish in the boat every time out. I honestly cannot remember the last time I got skunked!

Dave, I drove by the river on the way home at 4:30pm. It’s about as bad as it get’s for ice. Pretty much shore to shore at the airport and thru downtown. With another cold night tonight and no warm up in the forcast…..don’t look good. Evert’s anyone??

thanks for checking Dee Zee… I was going to call the east metro supervisor Dave Zapetello today.. but didnt get a chance… but last I talked to him he was also very happy about the results of catch and release and was sold on keeping it that way….. which us pool 2 guys know is key to keeping this fishery alive… its just to close to the metro to not get slaughtered if it was catch and kill… I know LOTS of people that WONT fish 2 because they cant keep the fish… they have no idea what they are missing…..
