Has anyone here ever caught a northern hogsucker? I am currently working on a paper about northern hogsuckers for a class, and I wanted to see if anyone her could give me some insight on how they caught one. Any information will be useful, but I do have some specific questions:
    1. What kind of bait/equipment did you use?
    2. Was there any type of specific technique you used?
    3. Where did you catch this fish?
    4. What time of the year did you catch this fish?
    5. Any other additional tips or comments.

    Thanks in advance!

I’ve caught a handful of them. I don’t specifically target hogsuckers, but sucker fishing isn’t terribly specific.

    1. Worm w/ slip sinker
    2. Just let it sit on the bottom and wait
    3. Zumbro River
    4. Spring

I have to write about northern hogsuckers’ role in the ecosystem and I have to address
    – What does the fish eat?
    – Where does the fish live?
    – When, where, and how does this fish reproduce?
    – How does the life cycle of the fish compare to that of a rainbow trout? (We spent quite some time in class studying rainbow trout.)

For the paper we are also required to “interview” at least two anglers who have successfully caught this species, hence this forum post.

    1. What kind of bait/equipment did you use? Small circle hook, piece of crawler
    2. Was there any type of specific technique you used?simple bottom fishing rig
    3. Where did you catch this fish?Just downstream of the dam in St. Cloud
    4. What time of the year did you catch this fish? End of May

Here is a picture of my girlfriend, who caught the only one I’ve ever seen. We were just bottom fishing in the Mississippi.

    You do the float down?

Between smokes and beers one year I stuck the ol headski under my tube right by some shallow stuff and I would’ve sworn there was dozens of dozens of hogsuckers right over the area we passed. Very cool sight.

Pretty sure I woke up one morning and caught one by shore, certainly at some point that weekend I saw one toast

No, I have some spots down there that I love to frequent in the early spring.

Here are a few that I’ve caught. They’re cool fish, but they fight less than a walleye (if you can imagine such a thing rotflol ).
