Had a good talk with the boys about what this special day means while we were fishing yesterday. I told them all of the freedoms we have today can be traced to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

I did something similar Sunday night. Was actually scrolling on my phone and my son saw a picture of a bunch of flags in a cemetery and asked about the picture. I thought for a minute how to explain this to a boy who isn’t quite 4 years old yet, but using some terms he’s seen on cartoons I was able to explain that bad guys have always tried to hurt us in this country and many people have fought the bad guys, and some of them died doing it, but that we can be happy and do what we do because they fought back the bad guys. He really did seem to get it.

After 53 years I still get tears in my eyes looking back at the pictures of three friends I served with in Vietnam that were KIA. I will never forget them. What upsets me is when someone thanks me for my service on Memorial Day. Some people just don’t get it.

Rather than get upset, just take a minute and explain to them what Memorial Day is for. They mean no harm by it.

Go every year to the Memorial Day and Christmas celebration with my boys and 5 sisters.
NEVER forget the reason you are able to love the life you do because of these folks. We make 4 different stops there to honor our relatives.
Wish more people would take the time instead of just flying by at 70 mph

If you live near a National Cemetery. Usually, the Saturday prior to Memorial Day weekend, and the Tuesday after. Volunteers place and pickup these flags. I was out of town on the Saturday. But yesterday, about 3 dozen of us picked up and bundled approx. 30,000 flags. Also a couple weeks before Christmas. “Wreaths Across America” places wreaths by volunteers. Or you can go to their website and donate a wreath. Like most times I attend these. Most of the volunteers are older veterans. I also attend one or two Memorial Day observances. Sad to see the low turnouts at some. Wish more folks would take an hour before the BBQ and thank those that fought, died for what we have. On a last note. I just had the privilege of escorting 2 Veterans, as a Guardian on the Honor Flight to Washington D.C.. As emotional as all the Memorials were for them. I was completely taken. That the Welcome Home at the airport was the most moving thing of the trip for lots of the Veterans. All but a couple were Viet Nam Vets. That didn’t get that when they deserved it. I know it’s late, usually 10:30. You may need to get up early. But the look on those faces. I would stand there all night. Think we could agree, they saw worse.

I agree, every year there’s guys that get bent out of shape over it, a lot of wasted energy if you ask me.
…and my brother was killed in Vietnam.

belletain, have you ever been out to DC to see the wall and your brother’s name? If the answer is no, then I can see how you feel this way. Trying to honor just the brave men and women of our country who died for it, is NOT WASTED ENERGY!!!!

Just explain to these people what the real meaning is. Because alot of people don’t get it. That is very true. But if they don’t get it now and no one explains it then how are they going to get it.

I understand the frustration and I don’t even have a military background. It’s right in the name “Memorial” Day – meaning it’s to give thanks, respect, and honor to those no longer with us. To those who didn’t make it home or who have died from injuries from their brave service. Yes, we should give thanks and honor to all our military members and that’s why we have Armed Forces Day and Veteran’s Day.

Remembering all who have given the ultimate sacrifice! Its because of all of them and those that have served that we can do all the things many take for granted. I dont have any close relatives that were lost in any wars or conflicts, but it doesnt change the fact at how much I respect those who have fallen. True heroes.

I have & I’ve been out there on Memorial day weekend. It’s the most solemn of the war memorials, can hear a pin drop. Wasted energy was a bad choice of words. I understand where people are coming from, honestly.
