Just wondering if I need this for the external GPS if I am not linking? I am running a HDS 7

Yes you need a NMEA netork for the external GPS puck. The HDS 7 does have an internal antenna so the external puck isn’t necessary unless you want your GPS to update more quickly.

No you do not need the starter kit but do need a NMEA network but you usually save a lot by buying the kit versus buying the parts seperately. You will need to use a power node to power the NMMA network and don’t forget the use a resistor at any open ends of the network, you can not just plug the puck into the unit because it needs power as well.
