I am looking to upgrade graphs and am considering a 788 ci hd for the bow and 798ci hd si for the console. My question, How worthwhile is side imaging on a 5″ screen? Anybody out there use this model? I would like to get two graphs and upgrading to the 800 series is out of my price range. Thanks for the help.

The small screen uses pixels that each represent too much area. It works for identifying large structure but even set on the narrow view, seeing fish is difficult. I would rather have one bigger unit than two small ones. I got mine before significantly larger ones became available so I’m stuck.

I guess my question to you is are you more of a casting to shore fisherperson vs plying the depths, whereas a HD di model might serve you better. Otherwise, with the screen options on the 788, I think you’ll find the 5″ screen while suffice.mike icePosts: 101May 6, 2013 at 1:08 am #1168566I have one and works fine. It would work but keep in mind you might want to keep the SI set to 50-70′ but If you can I’d recommend bumping up to the 800 series because you get the better transducer and will get just a little better SI views.
May 6, 2013 at 1:49 am #1168576I ran the Hbird 797c2SI for 6 years until I saved my nickels and dimes to buy an 1198. It is very do able harder to spot fish. Keep the SI distance down 40-50 feet ( I even do that with my 1198 ) and at times I used only one side so it would fill the screen. If you can squeeze out and get at least the 898 SI would be better. Watch for sales I have seen the 898SI HD for around $1300 after the Hbird rebate. Good luck and enjoy what ever you decide on.

There’s a rebate on humminbirds?
May 6, 2013 at 1:55 am #1168581I think it is still on depending on unit 50-100 bucks for the 800, 900, 1100.
mike icePosts: 101May 6, 2013 at 2:19 am #1168583I only seen the rebate on some 700 and 800 models. I didn’t see one for a 898 si. seems like 1300 is the price right now, could check with some of the sponsers here on IDO.
Like Tom said using one side SI to fill up the screen works too.May 6, 2013 at 11:48 am #1168638x2
I run the SI at 50 feet
When I moved the 798 to my new boat last year
I installed the HDSI transducer on the transom.
Really makes a diff for the SI
I run the regular SI on the trolling motor.
and use an A B switch for the console mounted 798
The HDSI really gives a better imageMay 6, 2013 at 11:58 am #1168647Thanks for all the info guys. Sounds like the 798 will work but the 898 gives better images. I’m going for the 898c HD SI. I talked with a buddy who can get me 50% off hummingbird electronics so that is a big help!!! Hope to sell my 597ci HD DI on craigslist and only having to throw in a couple hundred to boot.
reddogPosts: 801May 6, 2013 at 12:16 pm #1168655These are actual Humminbird rebates, or vendor codes that offer rebates.?
mike icePosts: 101artifishalPosts: 216May 6, 2013 at 2:43 pm #1168709Take a look on the bay of E, they have units that you can buy or place an offer for and will cost you around $1200-$1300 for the 898 HD.
