One thing to add fish ought to be frozen to kill possible tape worm ,just read this on InFisherman . I had done pickled fish years ago and never bothered with freezing them , after reading up a little precaution can go a long way.

What was it? 7 days at 0 degrees?

I know that it was the pike around the Great Lakes that had a better chance of having tape worms in them.

I guess it’s better to be safe then sorry…butt (<- see what I did there?) I haven’t heard of anyone having this problem…Maybe they just don’t talk about it?

    Bump..

I still can’t eat herring since I tried Fishing Macines pickled pike. It just tastes like slimy mush.

So how is Mary doing? Still remember her stories about commercial fishing. My favorite was of her making fishing sticks and sneaking down to the creek with her brothers to catch suckers.

I spoke with her about 2 months ago. She was doing well but misses fishing enormously.

Thanks for bumping this, I’ve been looking for a good Pickled fish recipe. One question. For the amount of fish what’s the best way to measure it in qts? just pile it into a glass bowl until you hit that mark? or is their a poundage equivalent?

I still have a copy of her pickled fish recipe in my recipe book circa 2005. All dog-eared and stained.

Funny the things you grow attached to over time.

I had a relatively unlimited supply of jars. I made 9 if I recall but I don’t have a clue how many fish I had.
