Spent a week out at Goose Island fishing for anything and everything. Took one night to fish for flatheads in a normal spot with a live gill and wasn’t set for 20 minutes before hooking into this beast…..41 inches and 35 pounds.

Nice fish! I wish we could use gills here.

Spawn marks on that one too, eh? I imagine the spawn has got to be almost over by now.

Wow, that’s one of the nastiest wounds I have seen. Nice fish!

I still wonder how they get those wounds. Personally I think that it is from nest building, but what do I know. Most marks are in that spot. Anyone believe that they bite each other there? They must go on their side or something, because I don’t know how an underbite could do that to the top of the nape of the neck…or where the nape of a neck would be on a flathead if they had one.

I’d be willing to bet that this fish spawned under a log and jammed his back up against the log repeatedly while digging out the nest.
