Does anyone have ideas on how to “loosen” the top so I can snap it together easily? I called a canvas place and they advised to cut the poles about an inch to lower the top about an inch. Anyone else done this before? Did it work?

Overtons sells a snap tool that works great on tops and curtains when the cold temps shrink the fabric.

The other thing you can do is lube the snaps. A little wd40 on a towel and wipe each snap clean will really help with the ease of getting them fastened. A little lube goes a long way!

It sounds like cutting poles is not the best route?
