Door County Sturgeon Bay

Well the autumn season is upon us now even though the temperatures may not feel fall like it is here. With the shorter days along with the cooler nights and dropping water temps fish will begin to get in there fall patterns and begin the late season chew. Here on the Bay of Green Bay we are seeing all species getting in to there fall patterns.

Lately I have been fishing for Smallmouth Bass in many different areas in water depths ranging from 10 to 30 feet of water. We have been casting white Terminator spinner baits in water depths from 10 to 15 FOW on 20lb Sufix braid with a flourocarbon leader of 15lb test. We have also been finding good success using one of my favorite baits the Rapala Rippin Rap in water depths from 15 to 30 FOW.Along with these presentations we have been getting good size fish running succer minnows on live bait rigs with 1\0 VMC circle hooks

This time of season including the entire month of October also provides great opportunities for some trophy size Northern Pike around the Sturgeon Bay area. This time of year I will both troll crank baits such as the Rapala Husky Jerks and Shad Raps along with running succer minnows on live bait rigs in Water depths from 15 to 30 FOW.

Today we experienced very windy conditions with the wind gusting at times over 30 MPH so we had to really keep a tight line to feel those sudden hits or else if there was to much slack in the line we would get hit and not feel it and miss the fish. As much as I do not like the big north winds I am looking forward to some cooler weather to start really dropping the water temps which will really get the bite smoking hot. Good luck fishing and be safe and feel free to ask me about any fishing info from our area.

  1. Paul, nice report. I am also beginning to see the fish go in the fall “Chew” livebait is hard to beat in my area at the moment. But some fish are smashing the jig so the Rippin Rap in gold shiner and yellow perch are gonna get a workout soon. Along with be the end of the month as you are seeing as well #12 and #14 husky jerks will become popular twiched along rip rap shorelines. I love fall fish there bellies are bursting they are spitting up food as you reel them in and they keep eating. Continued Success, – QB
