Post Spawn Green Bay Walleye Fishing

It sure has been a crazy spring here in Wisconsin with ice coming off the Bay Of Green Bay early with very cold water temps remaining for quite some time before water temps reached ideal spawning time. This allowed for a prolonged pre spawn fishing period which made for great opportunities at catching numbers of large pre-spawn fish.

Last week brought us abnormally warm temperature for several days which rapidly rose water temps very fast forcing the walleyes in to a quick march to there spawning areas and spawning in the matter of a few days.Prior to the warm up male walleyes had been moving into there spawning areas slowly each and every day awaiting the arrival of the large female walleyes which were holding back until ideal water temps.

We are now looking at water temps ranging from the high 40 degree range to low 50 degrees in some areas leaving the walleye spawn complete in most areas and walleyes beginning to disperse along shoreline breaks and flats that are near the areas that the fish recently spawned at. We have been finding the walleyes to be moving quite a bit from day to day even hour to hour .Most days wind direction has positioned the active walleyes in specific areas and once they are found we have been able to catch good numbers of active fish.

We have been using a casting approach to catching our fish on most days but we have also had some good success trolling for the walleyes on some days. As far as our casting we have been having great success casting Rapala Rippin Raps along with VMC Hot Skirt hair jigs in the 1/4 oz size along with 3/8 oz size. We have found these baits to be working great most days but have also found great success using 4 inch Moxies and Ring worms on 1/4 oz VMC Mooneye jigs. As the weather warms up again we should see the fishing action to continue to get better.
