Nebraska’s May fishing

May in Nebraska usually equals fairly decent fishing, and this year was certainly no exception. For the most part, the weather was very nice, but there were times when the wind howled as the temp dropped, so you had to be ready for about anything. One of the main techniques used was trolling, which yielded this nice wiper for dad. One of 7 master angler wipers taken last month with all being released.

We only had 12 wipers in the boat last month, so that ratio of big fish is pretty decent. We also had a couple more break us off, so you know they were good. Not to be outdone though, there were plenty of walleyes to be had too, including this fattie that went nearly 26″.

Had my friend and fellow IDOer HuskerDB with me and we managed to get his first wiper, which turned out to be a master angler as well. We have found a cheap $2 Wal-Mart crank to be very effective on these guys. They also catch good numbers of walleyes, amazingly.

When we weren’t out trolling and jigging for walleyes and wipers, we did a little bass fishing. I have really gotten into it this year with new access to close-by pits that I’ve never seen before. They have put out some nice fish, including this nice 21″ master angler. We’ve also been catching some other 19 inchers and some chunky 16-18 inchers. The jig-n-pig has produced well.

We can only hope that June will be as good as May. It’ll be a tall order.

  1. Here are a few more pics from May. These are some of the wipers we were able to get into the boat. All these are MA. Jake got his first wipers as well. Had a 3rd one on that came off. That was a great, wild night!

  2. There were times when the walleyes were so thick, you had to be quick, because the other rod would take off. Quite a few doubles, and even a triple or two thrown in. We did make it to Kansas one day last week, and it’s hard to count how many double and triples we had there on saugeyes and walleyes.

  3. And lastly, here are a couple 19″ LMB, a ma white bass, and another nice fish over 23″ for dad. The last pic was near the beginning of May when we trolled up a couple flatheads. The bigger one was 12lbs. Notice the wild color difference between the two.

  4. It looks like you had a great May Brian catching a variety of fish! Those wipers look huge! I’ve never caught one but they look like they would put up a great fight.

  5. I’ll tell you what you need to do…and that’s c’mon down and catch some! June, July and into Aug are all good for wipers. Even a small 4 pounder will make you wait while they tear out drag. Really hope we get some more 12 pounders this year, such a blast!

  6. Thanks Joel, it sure was a blast. June hasn’t started off too badly neither. We had 5 wipers in the boat the other night and only one of them was MA….what a bunch of crap!

They sure are a blast tho, no matter what size they come in.

I think Matt found that out again the other night. Glad you made it out and had some success, Matt!
