Sad day for the State of Hockey (and those of us with proud Latvian Heritage). George “Doc” Nagobads passed away at the age of 101 today. He was, among other things, the Physician for the Gopher Men’s Hockey Team from the 1950s to the early 1990s and the 1980 Miracle on Ice team. He was portrayed in the movie Miracle as the the older doctor and voice of reason at Herb Brook’s side through the entire movie. I’ve heard lots of great stories about him. He was apparently a devoted husband and father and visited his wife’s grave daily in Crystal Lake Cemetery in north Minneapolis. While doing so about 8 years ago he was assaulted and managed to fight off his attacker and drive himself to the hospital afterwards. Guy was a legend in the world of Minnesota Hockey, they don’t make them like that anymore and probably didn’t even make a lot of them back then. RIP Doc!
