HyVee gas

A couple years ago our local HyVees started this “fuel savers card” thing and of course they ran a promotion for the card which both Ma and I signed up for. Separately….just to take advantage of some of the sales stuff that was limited to one. Tw separate cards=2 items. You get the drift. Anyway we stopped at our HyVee just up the road because they had this Friday the 13th sale thing going on and Ma wanted to grab some of the things advertised and we qualified for a 13 cent bonus towards a gas discount. We didn’t need gas really but she suggested we slip over to the station and fill up. Since todays grocery purchase went on my card I gave it to her while I filled the tank. The gas bill on the pump was $38.00. Ma came out and was sort of quiet when we were driving out of the lot and asked if I wanted to guess how much our gas came to. I shrugged and she said “.13 cents”. I literally stopped the van and looked at her and she was all smiles and said “yup, 13 cents. Apparently you’ve been accruing more than you realized in bonus points”.

Well. she paid cash for the purchase. We haven’t handed cash to a gas station in years. But this was un-expected. And to boot, she still has HER card and she uses it for shopping as much as I have mine. I always thought it was a pain in the arse having to dig that little stub of a card out to scan but may have to re-think this. >13 cents for over 14 gallons of gas…..I never saw prices like that when I was a kid. >15 cents a gallon, yes. Not .13 cents for 14 gallons.

I use my fuel-saver card at Casey’s gas stations also, some times you save a lot and some a little. I think it is a good thing.

We almost never shop anywhere but HyVee since the Oakdale store opened.

The fuel saver card is awesome. I’ve gotten free gas several times. Technically you can’t get it free, you have to pay I think it’s 9/10 of a cent per gallon because of some state law, but I have filled up with 20 gallons for less than a buck about 3 times.

I think HyVee really dope-slapped the other Twin Cities grocery chains. Suddenly Cub and Target are remodeling old stores like there’s no tomorrow.

Just curious, how much do you have to spend on groceries and whatever else to get 20 gallons of gas for less than a dollar? Seems they just lost all their profit on the grocery sales basically giving $50 or more in gas away for next to nothing.

And do HyVee have their own gas pumps?

Tom and anyone else in Rochester,
The Costco in town is one of the only stores in the nation testing a $.25/gallon in-store rebate at their gas station. So if you have a Costco membership and aren’t getting a big discount at Hyvee and need gas check out Costco. Just be sure you print your receipt, otherwise I don’t believe you get it.

I don’t do HyVee unless they have a sale on something I need and the price has to be good enough to get me in there. Both Carole and I have found that when they have the deals that give X amount of cents per purchase towards gas discounts they have marked the item up and unless we absolutely need it we won’t buy that. Still, everyday shopping puts point on the card’s account. I think a lot of the card’s value came from last November when I was buying .99/pd pork butts to make venison sausage. I bought 150 pounds of the pork on sale at that price and I’ve bought much more since then, always at the .99 cents/pd.

The cards work. Here’s the receipt.

Having two growing boys helps. Or hurts, depending on how you look at it.

Usually, they have deals on Thursdays and Fridays, often it’s spend $X and get so much off a gallon. One deal last winter was spend $100, get $1 a gallon off, spend $50, get .50 cents off. So I split the shopping into 2 sessions and got $1.50 off a gallon, plus I bought some special items that had their own “buy this, get $.10 off per gallon” deal.

You can accumulate your savings for I think it’s 30 days, so if you hit a couple of those deals it’s easy to get at least $1 off a gallon.

Yes, the stores have their own station and it’s only up to 20 gallons at the reduced price. So far this year I’ve gotten $200 in free gas.

Not right now, no. I bought ton’s of the pork butts last fall/early winter when they were on sale. $1.49/pd right now I believe. Too expensive.

With these tarrifs being imposed by china I think pork is going to be super cheap come this fall.

Last I recall the amounts you get put on the card expire 30 days from the purchase dates.

The old card/offer I think was the case. The receipt is shown above from using the current card, which is relatively new….within a year. I’m not sure how its done, but not arguing with what we got credited. I know we had a different card before the ones we now use and before that first card we used our receipts of the purchases made within a week or ten days to get the gas discount.

Just filled up yesterday for $1.70/gal. Not my best one, but still a good price.

Filled up in Sioux Falls in mid June for a trip to Duluth; 20 gallons @ $0.86/gallon.
Hyvee rotates tons of items through the fuel saver discount program, many items what one would buy normally for a family grocery haul. Our average Hyvee trip is $85-$100, and we usually come out with a 30-40 cent discount, more if they are running a 10-20 cent discount on meat that is already on sale as well, and i’ll stock up.

Hyvee’s gas is purchased through Casey’s General Stores I believe; and the fuel saver program works at the Casey’s stations.

we used to do fuel saver a ton but now we only shop hyvee for whatever we can’t get at aldi. we save over 150 bucks a month buying groceries at aldi. there is no way we can get that savings using the fuel saver program.

at first i was skeptical but after a few months, i said, hon, lets try aldi and she said, hon, i’ve been shopping at aldi for 2 months. i’d not realized the difference.

btw, we buy most of our meat except chicken by the animal (1/2 hog, 1/4 cow) that lasts us a year.

I’m the same way. Only time I really get any amount on the card is when they have the spend so much you get so much on the card. Certain things just plain taste better from hyvee compared to the aldi version, but for the most part it’s pretty comparable.
