Eskimo Mako Auger Clutch Spring

I purchased a used Eskimo Mako Auger last year and have had good luck with it other than a few issues I have experienced this year. At the beginning of the season I put gas in the tank and it started leaking out of the grommet that the fuel line leaves out of the tank. Called Eskimo and had a new tank shipped to me the next day with free shipping and replaced it pretty easily. Last weekend I went to start the Auger and when I pulled the pull cable the auger blade was turning and the engine would not start. I figured something was wrong with the clutch since the blade should not be engaging on startup/idle. Took the power head off the transmission and the clutch spring was broken.

(To do this, on the bottom of the transmission there are 6 bolts, remove the 4 that go into the power head and leave the other two alone. You should be able to slip the power head off the transmission and keep the transmission case still together with the two bolts.)

Since I was 3 hours away from home I improvised and purchased a drum brake spring set at Autozone that had a similar sized spring. Worked to get me thru the weekend! At idle the motor had a ringing/rattling sound and after a bit of digging I figured that the clutch shoes were contacting the transmission ring to make a rattle sound. The spring I replaced it with must not have been strong enough. I called Eskimo and apparently you can not just buy the replacement clutch spring, but have to buy the spring and shoes as an assembly that is $30. Kind of annoying since the spring is about a $2 part. I measured the spring that broke and looked it up on Century Spring Corp (CSC) and found the exact spring for $2.61!! Even better I called the company to order a couple and since the minimum order is $50 the sales lady said she would send me 6 samples for free! Should have it back up and running early next week. If you come to have a broken clutch spring on your Eskimo Mako auger the replacement part # is 6084 from CSC. I will update the post if for some reason the spring does not work.

    Good Luck!
