Evening field hunts in the first few weekends are my favorite hunts of the year while the deer are still on daylight feeding patterns. Frequently I don’t even hunt mornings as I don’t want to disturb their pattern but this year my dad had only seen 4 deer total in the entire week leading up to season. With this being my only opportunity to hunt in September I decide to roll the dice and and morning hunt a stand of white oaks in an area where I knew a buck was living that I had an encounter with last year.

Maybe it was the storm coming thru overnight, the crazy heat, or just dumb luck my season was complete barely after it had begun.

    Now back to fishing!

Great buck. Do I see a spining? devil

    It’s a long story…

Last year I had a chance at this same buck on opening day but I misjudged the distance as 30 yds when it was really at almost 35 yds and my shot went low, probably only 1” from his vitals.

Forward to this year, he showed up at 10 yds just like he was supposed to. However, with all the leaves and rain overnight I never saw or heard him coming so my bow was still hanging and not in my hand (usually I hold onto it but the mosquitoes were so bad I needed both hands free to keep from being eaten alive). When I grabbed my bow off the hanger the arrow shifted and bumped the bow frame… I should have had a piece of felt tape on that part of the frame but of course had recently upgraded my bow over the summer and not yet had a chance to work out all the kinks. He runs out to 25 yds and stops broadside for probably close to 2 minutes right behind some thick brush. At this point I’m at full draw but I have no shot. He knows something isn’t right but he still doesn’t know what so he starts to double back and crosses into an opening. I judge the distance to be between 30 & 35 yds and with last years shot in the back of my mind I chose 35 and let my arrow fly. It ended up being right at 30 and I spined him.

It wasn’t a perfect shot but for me it was a perfect ending.

He’s dead right? Try as we may, not every shot is perfect. Congrats on a nice buck, with some history. waytogo
