finally got to go hunting…a real good day!

Well…I didn’t get a chance to hunt during early bow season but did do some still hunting with my Remington 7MM-08. Went out late Saturday morning after a light snow quit falling…
I was moving very slowly along a steep ridge overlooking a cedar swamp…when I noticed a movement back in the conifers. I sat down behind a tree stump and watched as this buck peeks out looking down the edge of the swamp.
I have a VERY small window which to put a 140gr Nosler Accubond into the sweet spot behind the shoulder…using the stump to steady my aim I squeezed off an accurate shot. He only made 40 yards.
He is a very typical, big bodied 2 1/2 yr old Upper Peninsula whitetail…his left brow tine was recently broken off…probably from fighting.

I have shot bigger whitetail bucks but not many still hunting. It is probably the most challenging (and rewarding) style of hunting. Truly a lost art in todays world of baitpiles, feeders, food plots etc…
Its the only way my Dad and GrandPa hunted.
I do hunt over bait also…just really enjoy doing it “the old fashioned way” during the rifle season.

It was 28 degrees but since I was slowly, but constantly moving. I wore my same Hyperhide pants and parka (GameHide) that I use during the Oct bow season. I am really impressed with this very quiet, warm and weatherproof fleece and give it very high marks. The same for Red Wing 800gram Buck Trackers…warm , waterproof , breathable , odor resistant…with great ankle support and traction soles…and very light weight!
Thank the Good Lord for a Good Day in the woods… I wish the same for all my fellow IDAers.

Is that not the truth. A skill I have been practicing/honing with my bow from time to time and looking to harvest a doe here soon. Great woodsman skill shown on your hunt Tom and yes definitley a lost art!

Tom that stuff rocks. I wear my Drizzle and Rub line gear from October until the seasons over. Man does that block the chilly Fal/Winter wind and I love the vents under the arms to keep you cool when you are on the move! The Drizzle jacket has stood up to all day down pours and kept me dry, but yet is very quiet in the woods. It is the attention to the little details that sets Gamehide clothing apart from the others IMO!

Congrats again on a great deer up there from ‘Da Nort’.
