MilleLacs Walleye Mania!

Well fishing on the Pond this week has been outstanding! I’ve had a number of trips and a great time was had by all including myself. I just love watching people get so excited over catching fish! I even had a guy tell me today that he’s been to Canada many times and has never experienced fishing like this. Everyone I’ve taken out can’t believe the fishery MilleLacs is right now!

With the crazy weather we’ve had this week I’ve been forced to fish new locations on the lake everyday. One day its 30mph out of the South and the next day from the North, then back to the South. For the most part this has really seemed to spread the fish out. But, if you use your graph you can still find pods of active fish. All you have to then is get your bait in front of em. It’s really as simple as that.

I’ve been using bobbers and leeches and Lindy rigs and leeches. I try to concentrate my efforts on finding fish on the top side of the rock, gravel and mud flats. I find these fish are usually the most active. These pods aren’t on top of this structure all day. They come up and feed and then they move right back off again. I’ve checked the same flat three times in one day before I’ve found fish stacked up it and feeding. Then I fish these pods until I quit reading fish and then I start searching for the next pod.

This type of fishing takes a little discipline, but if you stay at it, the end of the day results are worth it. Every group I’ve had out this week has caught their limit of 14″-18″, with some larger picture fish also showing up in the mix. This bite usually lasts most of June, but they way the bite has been this year, I’m hoping a decent bite will last through July and August as well.

This lake is truly amazing! I’m so blessed to have a job where I get to share my knowledge and passion for the sport I love! Contact me if you ever have any questions, good luck everyone!

I bought my first boat when I was 13 and I've spent about every day since on the water or ice. I do most of my guiding on MilleLacs and in the Alexandria Lakes area.

  1. Nice pics…Sure hope they are still hungry in two weeks when me and the boys get up there…..We’ll be doing alot of trooling, but we’re gonna try the bobber thing too….

  2. Great report and pics Joe! Again you gotta love it when the screen is full of fish like that. Like you said, if people only fished active schools of fish like those, they would have a much more productive day.
