Rainy Lake, Minnesota fishing report 6-01-10

The Big fish parade is on!! Flat out ON LIKE DONKEY KONG!! This week found Rainydaze Guide Service focused on the Big and the Dumb!! We’ll let the others chase the smaller smart fish. Ringworms and stickbaits had us struggling to find different camera angles for all the beautiful walleyes and Pike over the past days. on our best day this past week we caught close to 25 walleyes that were were in the 24-26 inch class!! We continue to focus energies on wind induced bites over shallow submerged rocks. Isolated bouldered patterns and cabbage lines continue to hold vast amounts of large fish. One note worth mentioning is we were catching a few Jumbo perch in the 12 inch class while chasing walleyes. Without question happening upon large perch will likey have the landing nets stuffed with large predator fish!!

With Memorial weekend traffic I expected to have some company this weekend, but was suprised to see most anglers working deep summer patterns. From talking with a few anglers some bigger fish are beginning to mix with smaller males over deep water, but it is my opinion many of the good fish are still in the transition zones. I believe these big females will remain in water under 20 feet for another couple weeks. This pattern calls for anglers to clearly understand baitfish movements throughout the day along with the effects of wind or lack off when attempting to locate target fish.

With recent rains we’ve found our lake level creeping upwards which is a welcome sight. Our water is simply prime for yet another tremendous summer of fishing. I challenge anglers this year to focus on learning new patterns or techniques to boat big fish. There is an element of personal satisfaction when peeling back the complexities of large fisheries like Rainy Lake, and having those Freak Fish all to yourself. Beyond fishing different areas commit to fish a different technique for the same fish. I have focused on working ringworms while customers predominately have worked stickbaits or cranks. The jig and plastic bite has been equally or even more productive often times. The change in pace also allows me to work fish in a nuetral mood where aggressive baits will mostly trigger aggressive fish!!

As I always say…..If the fishing doesn’t hook you the Rainy Lake experience certainly will. The overwhelming beauty and tranquility of Rainy Lake is quite evident in our customers faces as we cut through the puzzle of islands and blue water. The perfect combination of big water, and protected water continues to attract anglers across the state. Whether you would call yourself a Bass Guy…..Pike Freak….Slab Boy……Or Walleye Nut…..Rainy Lake will haunt you until your make the trek!! Until then we’ll be careful with these trophy fish by practicing effective CPR practices, and digitalizing them for your viewing pleasure!! We’re expecting a flat out awesome summer of fishing which will surely provide TANK WALLEYES AND SLABS this fall. When fish get busy early in the year you can expect even heavier fish in the fall than normal!! If you’ve followed our reports even on a passive level you know you darn near should take a leave of absence in September and October!! PERFECT RAINY LAKE HOUSEBOAT TIMEFRAME FOR A TRIP!! If anyone seeks Lodging/Resort information for an upcoming trip this summer/fall/winter… feel free to pm me, and I’ll get you pointed in the right direction!! We’ll see you on the water Team!! We’ll be the Skeeter with the Net out!! When your coming to fish with Rainydaze Guide service Bring your camera, and extra batteries…..We’ve got the rest!!
