Lake Independence, Mn walleye report

5 of us spent a few hours chasing some walleyes on Indy last night. We got all set up at about 3 to keep our noise down to a minimum. Normally the small perch are active until about 3:30-4, and then the walleyes will move in. It was much the same last night. We ended up getting 7 walleyes between 14-16" before we left at 6:30. No monsters, but at least it was action. The 2 I caught came on a pink glow jig with a fathead on a tip up in 24′. Scott had the hot stick putting the other 5 walleyes on the ice. (I guess that means the other 3 guys were skunked.lol) If I remember right, he was jigging a red glow spoon from Scenic Tackle and had a pimple under a bobber. Feel free to correct me Scott if I’m off.

The weather was very odd. While I was filling up the truck it was cloudless, no wind and felt almost warm. By the time I met the guys at the access, the wind started to howl and the clouds rolled in. I’m not sure if that affected the fishing, but we’ll find out over the next few nights.

The ice was a solid 7+" where we were fishing. Be sure to check as you go. There were a few drifts on the lake and then glare ice in spots. We also noticed the water seemed a little clearer than in the past. If you park at the park access, be sure to pay the $4 on Fri-Sun & holidays, or you will have a ticket to take home. Mon-Thur parking is free.

I love fishing both walleyes and bass. For walleyes I spend most of my time guiding on Mille Lacs. For bass I spend a ton of time on Minnetonka, but I cover most of the greater Minneapolis/St Paul Full Bio ›

  1. My first and only trip to Indy for ice fishing was back in the early 1990’s. We fished walleyes somewhere out in the middle of the lake. A buddy brought me out there to a hot spot he had going. That was an understatement. We caught walleyes like catching sunfish from a dock. You couldn’t get the bait down the hole fast enough. Didn’t even need bait for that matter. We used spoons and they would just crush it. Most fish were 14-16 inches.

Nice report Mike. Sounds like its still a good walleye producer.
