Missisippi River Pool 9 9/10/03

Happy Birthday Mary Christopher

I was a lucky fellow today and had the Fishing Machine in my boat to give me a lesson on crappie fishing. The day started off with a serious talk. Mary was very clear that there were things I could take pictures of and things i could NOT take pictures of. There were some family trade secrets to pulling in some of the biggest crappie that I have ever pulled in. The hardware is something I will never let let out of the bag..I Promised

Mary and I set off in a back water slough called Big Slough. We started working brush piles that had a bit of current and deep water off the end of it. Within minutes Mary had her first crappie. It was a nice 10 inch fish shown here.

While I had the corner on the the rock bass, Mary was able to pull in more crappie. I asked Mary what the deal was, and she helped me out with a couple of small tecniques and I caught my first crappie, a woppin 12 incher….

Let me tell you people something…This lady knows her stuff, She out fished me 5 to 1 if not more…She really knows her way around the river,a rod and reel, a boat, a bait box….I will enjoy the next outing we have…but next time we will go north and check out those waters. Here is a picture of Mary with a 12 1/2 inch crappie…one of several she caught. She tells me there are some 13-15 inch crappies out there and I’ll have to work to find them.. Happy Birthday Mary and thank you for a full days fishing

  3. Hey!! Thank you one and all. A special thank you to Dave for a great day. Not many young fellows would care to take an old lady out fishing. He also showed me how to hand line which is a cool way to fish also.
Had a great day for fishing and catching.
Thank you Herbie for giving me the opportunity to show Dave your secret trick to catching crappie. I can’t take all the credit you guys.

  4. Sounds like you two had a great day. My hat’s off to both of you. Dave, I’m glad to hear that you learned a new technique from Mary. Happy Birthday Mary and a great many more to come.

  5. It’s reading stuff like this that makes a guy feel good after reading about all the bad crap going on in the world or watching the news. Thanks

  6. That’s right! She needs to be with a good role model sometimes just to keep her on the straight and narrow.
    Thanks Dave.
