Lake Minnetonka, MN – Largemouth Bass

I spent the morning today fishing Minnetonka. The fishing recently had been very good for both numbers and size. With the weather change I was a little leary of what to expect on today’s trip. Scoot and I got an early start at 6am. We started by jigging a couple of my favorite deep spots with nothing but a couple of pike to show for it. With the deep bite seeming a little off, we next moved up to skip some docks. In no time we managed to boat a couple smaller bass Texas rigging a weightless fry. from then on we kept it shallow for most of the day.

On the first stretch of docks we hit, most of the bass came out from the dock, and even scattered between them. On our second stretch, the fish were a little tighter to the dock poles. The last stretch found most of the fish buried deep under the docks and boat lifts. We did manage a few fish in the upper 3lb range, and I would have been very pleased with our limit had we been in a tournament. The fish pictured here with Scott actually came off the docks a ways and came up and out of the milfoil to hit his fry.

The last spot we hit was a deep milfoil spot and we finally managed to boat a couple nice fish on jigs as well. The water temp has cooled off a couple degrees, and as it drops more expect the shallow water bite to get much better. The key from here on out if you plan to stay deep is to find green weeds. There is a fair amount of weeds out there that are getting pretty brown and not holding much for fish.

I love fishing both walleyes and bass. For walleyes I spend most of my time guiding on Mille Lacs. For bass I spend a ton of time on Minnetonka, but I cover most of the greater Minneapolis/St Paul Full Bio ›
