Lake Hubert, MN

The wife and I, as well as a few other couples from the Westonka Bass Club, spent a long weekend fishing Lake Hubert with Sunday being our annual Powder Puff Tournament. We choose Hubert because of the shear numbers of bass that the lake holds and the minimal fishing pressure that the lake gets. When my wife Becky and I reached the access at 10am on Friday, we were the only rig there. Other than 1 local, we were also the only boat on this 1300 acre lake. The lake has lots of shallow reeds ranging from 3′-5′ that are very clean. Inside 3′ it is all sand. From 5′-12′ there is bright green cabbage, and from 13′-16′ there is coontail. Last year the weeds grew out to 20′ in some areas.

I started by flipping a black/blue Outkast jig and Becky threw a Money jig with a spider grub in the cabbage. That day I out fished her with the 2 of us catching over 30 bass in under 5 hours. On Saturday we had planned to work the deep weed edges, but due to the wind we decided to hit docks out the calm shore. We skipped 5" Stick worms and had over 20 bass. The size was a little smaller than we had the previous day. We did manage to hit one deep weed edge where Becky managed to catch this bass that went just over 4lbs. We decided to call it a day after that fish.

Sunday morning the Powder Puff tournament rolled around. The women fish from 8-12 while the men run the boats for them. The wind was much calmer so we decided to start on a deep weed point. On Becky’s first cast she caught a pike, one of many we caught over the weekend. She managed 1 bass there before we moved. Our second spot was a deep weed hump. Again she was using a Money jig with a spider grub and she caught 6 fish off this spot, including the one is the second picture. It weighed 5lbs 9oz and was big fish for the tournament. From there we kept hitting other deep weed areas and caught fish on each spot.

When it was all said and done my wife won with 5 bass weighing 12lbs 2oz. 2nd place was Sherry Johnson with 8lbs 4oz (picture 3). Her fish were caught skipping docks. 3rd was Wendy Richter with 6lbs 2oz. Her fish were caught on Rattletraps and jig worms. 4th was Laura Stahmer with 5lbs 0oz (picture 4). Her fish came off docks and reeds. A great time was had by all. If you are in the Brainerd area fishing and want a gem of a bass lake, give Hubert a try.

I love fishing both walleyes and bass. For walleyes I spend most of my time guiding on Mille Lacs. For bass I spend a ton of time on Minnetonka, but I cover most of the greater Minneapolis/St Paul Full Bio ›
