Clear lake Ia April 14 /// Walleyes

After spending last weekend at the Mississippi River at Mc Gregor Iowa fishing a walleye tourny and getting our hineys handed to us I needed a walleye catching fix. I am happy to say the lake provided a very good trip. The wife and I got on the water early afternoon and had good fishing all day

The wind was about 10 mi an hour and I seen the opportunity to use it to our advantage. We drifted 1/16 ounce jigs tipped with Berkley power minnows over rocks in 3 to 5 ft of water. Swimming the jig with slow lift and drops worked the best we used rainbow fleck and green chartruce power minnows with both working equaly good.We caught lots of fish that were just short of 14 in that were alot of fun the keepers we caught ran from 14.5 to 16.5 and were nice healthy fish

After spending the winter harvesting yellows for eating we decided some baked walleye were inorder and these fish were perfect eaters. The method we used today is one of my most fun ways to fish as I love the feel of a walleye sucking in a jig we boated about 30 fish for the day. I was surprised that the males were not milking and it looks like the spawn is over with the warm water temps the short walleyes will have a long growing season and be keepers by next fall. I was surprised that we did not catch any yellows but I have heard they are biting on the rushes. Joe,s Guide Service 641-749-2239

  1. Nice fish and pics Joe! Thanks for the report. Good to hear the plastics are still workin down there. Suprising the yellow bass weren’t mixed in with walleyes. Must of have been nice to just hit the walleyes for a change. You hear of any big muskies caught yet this year?

  2. There were a few caught off the grade right after ice out but I have not heard of anything recent.

  3. Joe, great report. You be happy to know that we also felt the same way about the river. So my partner and I did what we do best. CLEAR LAKE HERE WE COME!!!!!! We spent Thurs. nite (TIL MIDNIGHT ) with a pretty consistant bite on glow floaters and a fathead. We also turned around and caught our limit FRI morning on JIGS. No plastics, Just a jig and a minnow. The big bummer of the day was when I lost the biggest MUSKIE of my life. At least a 25+# On a Orange Fireball/fathead. Had it up to the back of the boat, MADE MY NET LOOK LITTLE, when it took one last victory jump and swam away with my jig. All and all, great day and looking forward to the Tourney next weekend.
