Mississippi River Pool 9 Report 9/30/04

Today i met up with Ted Peck on pool 9 for a day of fishing for what ever was bitting…The day started out by running up Minnesota Slough looking for any area that were weed free that would hold walleyes..the best we could do is to work sand areas that still had weeds but concentrations of bait that the walleyes were chasing..We boated 6 walleyes out on one area before they shut down and we moved on..

We tried trolling cranks in a couple of places that just didn’t pan out..So off to the main channel and wing dams we went…We pulled up to some wing dams on inside corners and looked to find fish with out the weeds but they just werent there…after a couple more wingdams we came up on one that had a ton of weeds floating over the top of it so we had to pick out casts to avoid the weeds..after a couple of casts this walleye came on a rattln fat rap in the fire tiger pattern

well the frustration of all the grass got to us and with the gulls working the water hard we decided to head over and work some of the waters that were boiling with shad and white bass…using the new mepps spinners in the black and white fury pattern soon to be on the shelves we just hammered them. Here is a shot of the gulls working the water…It was the perfect invite

And some monster whites came from under this school of shad…the action was fantastic when you could keep the grass off your spinner…I believe we pulled over a dozen from this school before they moved off…Whites like this one Ted is holding were very common

  1. That’s very nice Striper. We got into some like that on pool 7 last night. Almost too much fun.

    Thanks for the report Dave!!

  2. Tom,

them white bass were on a terror…lots of them in the 1.5 – 2 pound range…the mepps in this picture was the ticket too..I thew one for a while(till i lost it ) then I threw another spinner and it just didn’t catch fish like the black and white mepps did…when these cpme out in the stores I’ll be having me several for the tackle box

  3. Believe the #4 white dot Black Fury closely approximates the shad forage base bait profile prevalent in the River now. I’ve had the chance to test it for over a month and this lure has been the hottest thing going for whiteys, plus pike on the rocks and smallies as well. Mepps doesn’t pay me anything, however they do throw a few baits my way. White bass will usually hit just about anything shad, chrome or white when they’re on a rip…but quite honestly they are hitting this lure more aggressively than any other bait I’ve thrown in the last six weeks. The folks at Mepps tell me it will be in the stores by the end of this month. Part of the key to success is retrieving the bait slowly, of course throwing upstream to offer a natural presentation is also a good idea…if the grass would just quit coming down the River it would be a perfect world.
Of course the high point was spending another day on the water with Mr. Koonce with a chance to share a cold one with my brother firefighters afterwards. Dave will never be the same after meeting Erkel, Mr. Greedy and getting angling input from Sam the Sock!
