Detroit Lakes Area Early Ice Fishing Report

Well I ended up making it out on Sunday, November 24th, for my first ice fishing adventure of the year. Though it wasn’t a trip where I brought home walleyes, I was still able to set the hook into a few walleyes and work the kinks out.

The ice was 5-6″ thick on the particular lake I was on. Conditions are different on lakes in the area and some of the lakes just locked up on Friday night. Please use caution before venturing out, as some of the “early ice” lakes were still iffy this past weekend.

I was hoping for better luck while out on the ice, but just getting out there again was enough for me. Temperatures are looking to be cooler again at night for the remainder of the week so the ice conditions should improve if we don’t get much for snow in the coming days.

Good luck and stay safe out there!

  1. The front that came through must have given a severe case of lockjaw to just about every walleye in the state as James and I struggled to even get a mark to even sniff our baits. Monday turned out to be much better.

Thanks for the report and keep us updated when you get a chance to get back out

  2. Good to hear you got out Loren. I was out on the Wisconsin River yesterday at the Dells. The current is strong enough that it doesn’t freeze. We got a few small saugers on hair jigs with minnows but no walleyes. Like you said it was fun getting out fishing.

  3. Nice work Loren! Just getting out these days is half the battle, good to see you went out and kicked off the rust. That’s what I’m doing now, looking forward to getting into a groove for the rest of ice. Thanks for sharing!
