Door County Walleye and Pike action

Well with the water temps now reaching the low 50 degree range here in Door County the Walleyes are pretty much all done spawning. While I usually do a lot of night trolling for walleyes this spring I have only trolled one evening for a few hours all of the walleye fishing that I have been doing has been during the day casting and jigging for fish.

As mentioned in previous reports we have been throwing jigs along with the Rapala Rippin Rap size #6. Each days fishing trips seem to be a little different while we have been fishing a few of the same areas each day our catches have been inconsistent with one trip only getting 3 or 4 fish and another trip getting 8 or 9 fish.

Our targeted species have been Walleyes but there are some nice Northern Pike around that have been willing to cooperate. On days that the fish are more active the pike have been smashing our jigs and Rapalas but we are also picking them up on succer minnows behind bottom bouncers.

Yesterday presented us with warm temps along with no winds. Here in Door County we have very clear water so with no winds fish can become very spooky and inactive. We did not get a lot of bites yesterday but we did catch some nice Walleyes along with a half dozen Pike. In some areas with the water so clear we could see the Walleyes just laying on the bottom absorbing the sunlight. We will be back after them tomorrow and it looks like the wind will be with us.

  1. Nice pigs Paul! Do you mind sharing if your still fishing the bay/point shorelines or have they moved off to the flats around the reefs? I may have a couple days to fish by myself and thinking about breaking in a few new baits the proper way. Thanks

  2. Here in Door County the fish have finished up spawning but they are not far from where they had spawned. During the day I have been casting for fish in a little deeper water from where they would be at night. Some fish are being caught at night in shallower water over the rocks.
