Green Bay Walleyes April 28th

With the Walleyes just about all finished up spawning in some of the areas around Green Bay the fish are beginning to move out of the areas that they were spawning in and are responding to rising water temps and are beginning to put a feed on. With the ice just going out in some areas late last week other areas have water temps in the mid to high 40 degree range.

I have been fishing a few areas that have quite a few fish there with more and more fish showing up daily. It was hard to believe the weather that we had this weekend the SUN was out and the temps were WARM and the fish were loving it and so was I. We have been targeting water depths from 5 to 15 FOW casting for fish with soft plastics along with Blade Baits.

On Sunday morning we got on the water around 6:30 and went to an area that I had fish going a few days earlier. We began catching fish right away on everything we were throwing at them we caught 18 fish in the first 45 minutes that we were there. Shortly after that the fish were gone and we only caught a couple fish in the next 45 minutes. I have seen this happen many times and will see this many more times but it is not always that the fish stop biting many times the fish just move.

I was confident that the fish were still close by it was just that we had to locate them again. We finally found the fish again with in a few hundred yards from where we were and they went nuts we were catching fish on almost every cast on everything we were throwing at them there were several times that we had three fish on at the same time. Blade baits along with the Rapala Rippin Rap were our best baits. Most of our fish were from 22 to 24 inches but we had many fish that were larger including a 29 inch fish.

  1. Paul,

I want to try the Rapala Rippin rap. What jigging method were you using? Was it similar to the way you were fishing with James on the show from Sunday where you were ripping the bait with a slack line?

  2. Ben

I use this bait for both walleyes and smallmouth bass. When using it for walleyes in colder water yes I use it exactly like I would be using a blade bait. In warmer water when fishing for smallmouth I will use the bait with more of a swimming and pumping action. The real cool thing with this bait is that you can use it many different ways in many different water depths. Give this bait a try and I think you will like using it.
