First Ice Mississippi River Bottoms

Well it’s been a long time coming. I have been needing an ice fix since all of last year. We just didn’t have a lot of safe ice last year…
With a couple of PM’s I met up with Duke and Alex Welter and we got out on a good early ice spot. With spud bar in hand we worked out way out into the bay and made our set up in about 4 feet of water.
The new LX-6 was just itching to show her dashboard and reveal what lies below the ice…

It wasn’t long before Alex sticks a nice perch. He was using an orange chartreuse diamond jig and he did have the hot stick today !! Alex is using the Marcum VX1 and does a very nice job of working the shallows with it.
Duke was the Bass Masters Classic winner today. Duke was prowling the perimeter holes catching some nice perch as well..Long rod in hand, 3lb test in hi vis, fish fear him !!!

I got to put the new TUC 30″ Precision Noodle to the test. this rod did not let me down… I am used to fishing spring bobbers and have not had the opportunity to have such a fine piece of equipment in my arsenal. I am a true believer… We iced several gills, perch, crappies and bass today and all fish were returned to swim another day..
Now as long as we can keep mother nature at bay with the snow, the temps for the next week or so should give us a fantastic base for the new ice season !!

Good luck out there and be safe !!

  1. Nice report, every time I hear river bottoms I think of a man chasing a jigglestick under the ice. . Its on the list of things to do come chase backwater pannies. -Q
