Door County Smallmouth Action October 9th

Tuesday had us wearing layers of clothes underneath our Gore tex outer layer to stay warm and dry. Leaving the dock at 8am the predicted strong winds were not blowing as hard as forecasted so I headed out to an area that has been holding some really nice fish along with large numbers of them.

Shortly after getting out to our area where we were going to start fishing the rain began to fall and never stopped all day. The nice thing was the wind never got to bad and we were able to fish in it the whole time. We immediately began catching fish and they never stopped biting the whole time we were out.

I began fishing in 25 to 30 FOW and we were catching fish but I just was not seeing the numbers of fish that I thought should be in the area so I slipped the boat in to 15 to 20 FOW and they were thick and it was lights out. We continue to catch great numbers of fish on the live bait rigs with succer minnows.

With water temps dropping in to the mid to low 50 degree range I have been also throwing some artificials at them including the Rapala Rippin Rap along with some blade baits from B-Fishin Tackle. This day I had better success on the blade baits. What was interesting is the fish rarely hit the bait on the rise or fall but instead they would pin the bait to the bottom after it settled. With out using a no stretch line like Suffix 832 I would never feel those fish pick up the bait on those long casts. Good luck and as always be safe.
