Dog Day Walleyes in South Dakota

With summers heat continuing to beat down on South Dakota the fishing has for the most part continued to be good. This past weekend I had the opportunity to get back on a body of water I had not fished in over a year. The crank bite in dakota finally kicked in and just in time as I had a stretch of a few days off.

We started trolling more open water in the 17-20fow range, but found fish hugging the weeds in 13-15 fow. We started with colors that I have done will with including firetiger and chartruese but changed over to glass raps in size 05 with glass white being the hot color. I only had one of these in the boat unfortunately, so we were digging for more glass shad raps. I found another hot perch color and we were in business with both rods bending over every couple minutes. We were taking turns and having a good time at it. Fortunately for me the rods bent over with the big fish of the day when it was my turn. Later on we lost one of the glass raps and it was back to basically catching fish on the one lure. We fished for about 3 hours with close to 40 walleyes coming to the boat. We kept some for a few meals, and let the big ones go. It was a fun morning on the lake, and I am hoping this crank bite continues. Hope you all have a chance to get out. -Quintin

  1. Awesome update, QB. I know you spend a lot of time hunting in the fall but I can’t help but think the walleye bite out there in late Sept. – October has to be out of this world.

This year it is going to get exploited

Fish it early and late. Shoot ditch chickens midday. Best of both worlds.

  3. Nice, I learned the hard way to keep a couple extra glass shad raps in the box. Too bad I have a couple weddings coming up, but the fall trip will be changed from Mille Lacs to the Webster area and try to key in on a few bonus piggie perch

  4. Love it! Nothing better than crossing your fingers everytime you make a dangerous pass to make sure the one lure in the boat that’s slamming fish doesn’t get lost.

Like James said, fall time out there must be ridiculous!

  5. Good report! I’m looking forward to getting back to Watertown (my hometown) for some fall fishing and hunting. I’ve had a couple of great trips out there this summer, already. Good to hear the bite is still hot.
