Multi Species On Chequamegon Bay

Well with this warmer weather temping to try and get ice off my mind “fat chance” for this ice head! We have been fishing the Chequamegon Bay from side to side and end for end. These past few outings have been good however nothing lights out for fishing. We have had just a gas fishing for all these Brown Trout, and mixing in a little multi species into each days catch. Not sitting on one spot to long has been the ticket since the bite has slowed over the past week. Run and gun fishing multiple spots & short and long moves has been the key to our great success. Add that all in with some proper modified lure choices and some none and semi aggressive jigging presentations. We have been still putting fish on the ice each day. Spoons, Blade baits, jigging raps, and tip-ups are all working great and some color choices we have been using are orange, gold, silver-blue, silver-green and white. Here was the first brown of the day that took on a 1” puppet minnow fishing in 30ftow out along the Washburn side of the bay.

Fishing just to the inside of me was my good friend Capt. Andy who was sight fishing in 20ftow when this Brown Trout took his pimple 10ft off the bottom and was soon invited to the ice for a pic. Soon after the fishing we were marking and seeing came to a halt and we packed up and made a short move up the shore line and set up camp quick again spread out from 10 to 25ftow.

After a quick 20 minutes we started picking off some sizable perch in good numbers. Working small blade baits semi aggressive they were slamming them on the drop and a few on up swing pops 5” and shorter. In the mix of it all we even had a chance to drop down some plastics motor oil J&S Go Jo’s on some small spoons and landed into a few more for the afternoon. Capt. Tom & Capt. Andy with a Chequamegon hand full.

To end the day Friend and fellow guide Capt. Tom moved out just near the drop to the channel and found himself in the mix of some bruit Whitefish and a herring that all fell for some 1” puppet minnows he was using. What a way to cap the day off multi species on the Chequamegon Bay with Marksman Guide Service and crew! Stay tune for the next report.

  1. nice job on the report,i will be on the bay all of next week, hope to ice a few fish as well i will post our catch here.

  2. Nice fish John, and what a mix of species. I can think of few places besides maybe the river where a guy can catch as many species in one-sitting as the bay up there. What other types of fish show up there for you?

Heck, I even shocked some Chequamegon vets by catching several very nice crappies along the shipping channel one spring!!!
